A big update is now available for Ghost Recon Wildlands, the 2017 hit that took players to Bolivia to face off against the Santa Blanca Cartel. Starting today, players who own Wildlands on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC will be treated to a new free story mission and the return of the Predator mode, as well as a suite of quality-of-life updates for the game. All of this is to celebrate the Ghost Recon franchise turning 25 this year.
“Ghost Recon wouldn’t be where it is today without the passion, dedication, and feedback of its community over the past 25 years,” said Olivier Leonardi, Creative Director. “With Last Rites, we wanted to create an experience that honors that legacy—something that feels authentic to longtime Ghosts, celebrates what makes this franchise special, and reflects our appreciation for the players who have been with us every step of the way.”
Last Rites is the new mission players will embark on, taking them through the swamps and dense forests of Bolivia to face Los Penitentes and their leader, La Llorona. Los Penitentes have driven La Unidad from the area with their fanaticism about violent justice, faith, and sacrifice. Nomad and his squad have to investigate the cult and its leader and end up uncovering a secret the CIA wishes they could've burned.
I was able to get an early hands-on with this mission, which takes up to two hours to complete. I made stealth my main game, using my squad's synchronized shot to sytematically dispatch enemy combatants and infittrating from the shadows to gather intel. The story takes a wicked turn that has Nomad questioning what the real objective is now that underlying motivations have been uncovered.
Overall, this is a fun and unique mission that adds a little more spice to the story in Bolivia. It's been years since Ghost Recon Wildlands received a content update, especially since the launch of its successor, Ghost Recon Breakpoint. Both games will be free to play through August 10 if you're looking to dig in.
Alongside the new mission, the Predator mode also makes a return, where players have to investigate brutal murders in the Bolivian forests. Their findings eventually put them face-to-face with the deadly Predator itself.
Alongside these free-to-play and content updates, Wildlands is also being treated to a current-gen update, including 4K/60fps support for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 and other visual enhancements. Players will also see new gameplay experience updates that will allow them to fiddle with certain gameplay, environmental, UI, and other parameters, like changing the time of day.
Lastly, and something I'm particularly excited for, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier will be free to redeem for PC players on Ubisoft Connect throught he 13th. Step into the boots of Kozak and Team Hunter in a futuristic Ghost Recon. Also, keep an eye out for the 25th anniversary bundle for Ghost Recon Breakpoint next month
