Blizzard Entertainment recently released The Hearthstone Pop-Up book. As a frequent Hearthstone player, and old school World of Warcraft The Card Game player, I was very excited to review this book, which you can purchase from the Blizzard Gear store. With five vibrant 3D pages, this pop-up book brings the game to life.
Illustrated by Mike Sass with Simon Arizpe as the paper engineer, the book teaches you the basics of playing the Hearthstone card game. Page one begins with a cozy pop-up of Harth’s Tavern. Gathered at a table, you’ll see Harth and his sidekick Sarge, playing a game against Malto and his baby whelping. The warm colors and roaring fire in the background make you feel like you’re actually there! A small pop-out on the bottom right explains how much fun it is to play a game of Hearthstone with friends.
The second pop-up in our book features a stunning display of a Hearthstone box springing to life. The sides of the pop show the map of Azeroth, and a sliding wheel on the bottom right tells you about The Year of the Zodiac, and how Hearthstone rotates their cards based on the passage of the signs.
Page three goes over deck building, with a fiery pop-up featuring the back of Hearthstone cards. A slider on the right flips one of the cards over, revealing the Leeroy Jenkins card!
Pop-up number four features a gorgeous 3D game board, complete with a zeppelin, the entrance to Orgrimmar with a movable gate (FOR THE HORDE!), an interactive catapult, detailed pictures of Anduin and Gul’Dan, and a pull-out card on the bottom that when “played” destroys all minions on the game board!
The fifth and final pop-up page is my personal favorite. It shows Thrall, Malfurion, Uther, Jaina, Garrosh, Gul’Dan, Valeera, Anduin, and Rexxar in a vibrant 3D pop. There are cards on the bottom that flip open to give short bios on all of the featured characters. The details and colors on this page are stunning.
Holly Hudspeth is a best-selling author living in Fort Worth, Texas. She has six published novels to date; The Skyy Huntington Series, which is an epic dark fantasy adventure, and One Small Detail, a stand-alone medieval fantasy. Holly also enjoys writing fan fiction based on her avatars from games such as EverQuest, Elder Scrolls Online, and World of Warcraft. Her first major purchase at the established age of nine was the NES, and she has been gaming ever since. She enjoys fantasy games, city builders, RPGs, MMOs, SMITE, and The Sims franchise. Most nights she is in SMITE with her husband and friends, or playing ESO. When she isn't gaming, she is probably either at Disney or planning her next trip there.
While it has a bit of a steep price of $65 USD, The Hearthstone Pop-Up Book is an excellent collectors item for those that play and enjoy Hearthstone. It would make a fun gift to both give or receive with the holidays right around the corner. With the outstanding artwork, I fully enjoyed each page.
