Lorcana Collector’s Guide review

A premium book for old-school collectors.

The covers of both guides shown on a table.
A nice hardcover book is hard to beat and these are no exception.

The official Lorcana Collector’s Guides are hardcover books that cover groups of 4 Lorcana sets. The books serve two purposes. The first part dives deep into the lore of each set and expands on the narrative story that each set is telling. Collectors who spend hours poring over the card artwork and pondering the quotes found on each card will be thrilled to have such a trove of additional information to sink their teeth into.

The whole first part of each book features full page artwork and Lorcana lore to sink your teeth into.

The second purpose of the books is to create a physical system to track your collection. Every card in each set is printed in the book with checkboxes to track if you have the Base, Foil, or special version of the card. As technology overwhelms every aspect of our lives while simultaneously making everything seem worse, I am pumped to see a physical product like this. They remind me of my elementary school days toting around my Pokédex and trading cards on the playground. There is just something about taking out a pen and ticking off a checkbox that is satisfying in ways tapping on my phone in the Lorcana app or some other digital tracker can never replicate. A physical book allows you to engage in the game in a new way and feel like you are really building towards something as you strive to complete your collection.

Checking off boxes is strangely satisfying in a way a digital tracker can never replicate.

Even if you’re not a collector and just enjoy the fantastic artwork in the game, these books are a great way to browse through the cards and take in all of the amazing talent that went into creating them. Priced at $19.99, the books are nicely made and feel like a premium product with their hard covers. Full page artwork and foil treatments on the covers make it feel worth the price.

The spines are nicely labeled and numbered so they stand out on a shelf.

Lorcana Collector’s Guide

Good

The Lorcana Collector’s Guides put all of the game's lore in one place and provide a physical medium to track your collection and admire the artwork. The hardcover books feel great to hold and have a nice shelf presence as well.

Pros
  • Gets you off your screen
  • Stuffed full of artwork
Cons
  • None really. It’s a nice book.
