FlexiSpot E7L Standing Desk review — Big on space, strong on performance

FlexiSpot has a wide variety of standing desks, and they’ve recently released the FlexiSpot E7L, a pro-level L-shaped standing desk. I recently got my hands on one, and it’s designed to offer both plenty of space and top-tier functionality for those looking to upgrade their workspace. But does the E7L truly deliver on its promises, or is it just another standing desk with extra surface area? Let’s dive in and find out.

The ordering process is pretty straightforward, walking you through selecting all the options. At the time of writing, there are two options for desktop material, two desktop sizes, two frame colors, and three desktop colors, depending on the material. For desktop materials, the choices are chipboard and bamboo. Selecting chipboard lets you choose between black or white for the desktop, while bamboo comes in its natural color. The frame options are also black or white.

Selecting the size is where things start to get a little confusing. The options are 63”x47”x24” and 71”x47”x24”. However, when selecting the 63” option, the image shows one of the desktop segments as 48”x24” and the other as 40”x24”—the math doesn’t quite check out. I originally chose this option, thinking the smaller segment would be the vertical side, since I have a corner with a 40” wall that would have fit perfectly. It turns out the actual desktop segments are 47”x24” and 39”x24”, which makes sense for the 63” total. This means the shorter segment is for the horizontal side of the desk, while the longer one is for the vertical side.

The desk ships in three boxes: two for the frame and one for the desktops. Everything was well-packaged to keep it protected during transit. The boxes used a mix of foams and thick cardboard to keep everything secure. The desktops had foam-lined cardboard corners and foam sheets covering the surfaces, helping to cushion against bumps and prevent rubbing during shipping.

The assembly instructions were mostly clear until it came time to connect the two desktops. The instruction manual seems outdated, showing the desktop as one large L-shaped piece rather than two separate rectangles. FlexiSpot does have an assembly video on YouTube that shows the build process, and it seems more up-to-date than the manual, as it shows connecting the desktops via a bracket. However, that part of the video is brief and lacks detail, making it hard to tell how to properly orient the desktop segments. Although the desktops have predrilled holes, they didn’t line up as expected, and it took several attempts to reorient them before I got it right. Since the desktops aren’t symmetrical, there’s only one correct orientation where everything lines up. An updated instruction manual would definitely make the build process much smoother.

The desktop panels are reversible, allowing you to set them up in either a right-hand or left-hand orientation. Even though I’m right-handed, I planned on setting it up in a left-hand configuration due to where I wanted to place the desk in my home office. Remember how I mentioned one of the desktop panels was 40” long, and I thought it would fit against a 40” wall? Well, since I misunderstood the dimensions, it didn’t fit where I had planned. I still placed the desk there, but now the vertical desk is in the middle of my office instead of tucked in the corner. The downside to this is that when I’m in standing position and tuck my chair under the desk, the vertical desk leg sticks out, turning the desk foot into the Toe-Stubber-2000. Not entirely the desk’s fault since I misunderstood the dimensions, and I don’t have a better spot for it, but I think the size descriptions could be clearer.

One of the harder things to manage with standing desks is cable organization. The FlexiSpot E7L helps with this by including a cable tray that hangs from the back of the vertical desk and cable baffles to channel the motor cables between the frame bars. The baffle on the horizontal desk screws in securely, but the one for the vertical desk does not. Since the vertical baffle doesn’t screw in, it’s easy to use for other cables as well. I used it to run the power cables for my monitor and desktop to the power strip.

Now that we’re set up, let’s dive into the specs of the FlexiSpot E7L. The desktop itself is made from 0.7” thick bamboo, offering durability and a solid feel that holds up well to daily use. With a load capacity of 330 pounds, it easily accommodates my desktop, monitor, speakers, and laptop with room to spare. The desk features an adjustable height range from 25” to 50.8”, powered by triple motors, ensuring smooth and quick transitions. It also comes with three programmable height presets, making it simple to switch between sitting and standing at the push of a button. And with a 15-year warranty, it’s clear that FlexiSpot stands behind the quality and longevity of their product.

So, does the FlexiSpot E7L truly deliver on its promises, or is it just another standing desk with extra surface area? After spending time with it, I can confidently say the FlexiSpot E7L goes beyond just offering more space. With the three legs acting like a tripod, it’s incredibly sturdy even at standing height, providing a solid and reliable workspace. The smooth height adjustments, powered by triple motors, make switching between sitting and standing effortless, especially with the programmable presets. The built-in cable management system is a thoughtful touch, keeping everything organized and reducing clutter.
