Disney Lorcana: Azurite Sea starter decks review — A Pirate’s life for me

Lorcana is now in its 6th chapter with Azurite Sea. As a pirate fanatic, I can easily say it is the best set yet. The theme is bright and distinct in a way that previous sets didn’t always achieve. The pirate versions of our favorite characters are a treat just to look at and the artists really knocked it out of the park. As usual, there are two starter decks to choose from if you want to jump into the set with zero effort or just don’t enjoy the deck-building aspect of the game.

The first starter deck is an Amber-Ruby deck that features Treasure Planet and Winnie the Pooh characters decked out in pirate gear. I think Treasure Planet is criminally underrated so I am super excited to see it featured more heavily in Lorcana, even if the starter deck only has a few cards. The pirate characters benefit from several buffs that trigger off the pirate keyword. Cards like Jim Hawkins, Pooh’s Pirate Ship, Kakamora, and others will make your other pirates perform better. Taken as a whole, the deck isn’t complex to play and won’t be hard for anyone to pick up. It’s not going to take on a well-built custom deck and be successful, but when pitted against the other starters it’s a fun time. The real joy is the artwork. Pooh, the Hunny Pirate, is top-tier.

The second deck is an Emerald-Saphire deck that shows off the second keyword of the set, Inventors. Gadget Hackwrench and Go Go Tomago lead the way with Inventors helping and buffing each other in a very similar way to the pirates. Big Hero Six features heavily throughout the deck but it also has some more Treasure Planet and Rescue Rangers as well. If you like playing with items and tech cards, this is the one for you. The deck is straightforward to play just like its counterpart. The art and reference material in this deck doesn’t appeal to me as much as the Pirate deck does but it’s still fun to play.

Epic two player strategy games are his favorites but he enjoys pretty much everything on the tabletop, just no Werewolf please. When he gets a break from changing diapers and reading bedtime stories he can usually be found researching new games or day dreaming about maybe one day having time for a ttrpg. Some of Mark's favorite games are Star Wars: Rebellion, A Feast for Odin, and Nemesis.

Review Guidelines

Lorcana starter decks remain a great way to enjoy the game without worrying about deck building and chasing hard-to-find cards. The ability to open the box and play straight away is great, especially if you’re like me and primarily play with family at the kitchen table. Everything you need to play is included and you can get straight into the fun.
