The Battle for Boston Starter Set has arrived for Fallout: Factions, Modiphius’s skirmish game set in the world of Fallout.
In Factions, players customize, build, and paint survivors of their chosen crew and play head-to-head in a tactical tabletop game. Whether you’re playing a single game, or a series of games over the course of the campaign, Fallout: Factions gives players the opportunity to fight for their cause in the Wasteland.

The Battle for Boston Starter Set is the newest starter set for the game, giving two players enough minis, tokens, dice, and terrain to hop in and start playing. Modiphius sent us a box, so power on your Pip-Boy and let’s see what’s inside.
Unboxing the Battle for Boston Starter Set
This box is big! Of course, it needs to be because it comes with everything two players need to play: 20 miniatures, a map and terrain, rulebook, dice, and more!

Battle for Boston Starter Box Contents:
- 1x 106-page rulebook
- 1x sprue of 12 hard plastic multi-part Institute miniatures (and bases)
- 1x sprue of 8 hard plastic multi-part Brotherhood of Steel miniatures (and bases)
- 4x sheets of punch-out terrain
- 1x double-sided, heavy paper battle map (3’ x 2’)
- 1x miniatures build guide booklet
- 100 tokens
- 12 Fallout Themed dice (Vault-Tec)
- 2 blank crew rosters (laminated so they can be reused)
- 2 pre-built, Starter Crew Rosters (The Quick Reference Guide is on the back of one them)
- 1 Fallout themed tape measure

All the figures come unassembled, so you will need model clippers and super glue. The instruction guide is for both the Institute and Brotherhood of Steel miniatures. The instructions also include the ‘Starter List’ for both the Institute and Brotherhood of Steel, with the assembly guide stating which arm/hand has what weapon.

The rulebook is a nice softbound book, full of lore, rules, and content for playing multiple games. The Crew Roster sheets are made with a nice laminate paper, so they can be wiped down and used again.

You can also go to the official website and download the Crew Roster and Quick Reference Guide.
If you have miniatures from Fallout: Wasteland Warfare or the Battle for Nuka-World Starter Set, they can be used for games with Battle For Boston. Everything is all compatible! There is also the Fallout Wasteland Warfare/Factions app you can download. Some features and content require a subscription, however.

Battle for Boston Punch-Out Terrain
The punch-out terrain is a really nice inclusion to the box. For players who don’t have any terrain, or don’t have enough, the punch out terrain is of a really solid quality. They punch out cleanly, and the buildings have dual sides to them, so you have some options for building.

Even though punch-out terrain isn’t as eye-catching as plastic or 3D printed terrain, this terrain still looks great on the table and serves its purpose. The two-story buildings are sturdy and can very easily support a few pieces standing on them. For a 3x2’ board, this terrain helps fill it out nicely. After all, the Wasteland isn’t exactly brimming with buildings still standing.

Once assembled and on the playmat, the terrain looks great, especially for a Starter Box. Depending on how you like to fill out a battlefield, you may want to add more scatter terrain, or even a large centerpiece of terrain. I would also recommend leaving the playmat out under some heavy books so it can flatten out.

While it all can be disassembled, I would recommend keeping it assembled so as to avoid wearing down the connection points. In fact, a small dab of super glue could help keep it sturdy. Once assembled, it all fits nicely in the lid of the box for storage.

Next Steps into the Wasteland
In an upcoming article, we’ll be covering how to build and paint both the Institute and Brotherhood of Steel crews in a handy Learn to Paint guide. We’ll go through step-by-step on how to quickly paint up your crew and get them ready for war!
As far as skirmish game starter sets go, this one is robust. We anticipate getting a lot of mileage out of building, painting, and playing. Overall, the Battle for Boston Starter Set is a great gateway for you and your friends to get into the world of Fallout: Factions!
