I remember watching Ready Player One and seeing the omnidirectional treadmill and thinking it was the far-flung distant future. There was no way that we'd be seeing something that would let us run in VR without it being clunky at any time in my lifetime, right? Well, how wrong I was. While what was shown in the movie was a barely working prototype, what the folks at Virtuix were cooking up was something a whole lot more viable. Fast forward to today, and I have something amazing to share with you – we're launching a brand new show called Treadmill Tuesdays. In it, we'll be running on the Virtuix Omni One using the Meta Quest 3 to showcase what VR at the next level could be.
In this first episode, I'll show you unboxing the Virtuix Omni One, setting it up, and getting into it for the first time. I'll showcase every setting and how it all comes together, with a touch of gameplay at the very end with what Virtuix is calling "First Steps". Not unlike the First Steps setup for the Meta Quest 3, it walks you through a brief test of how to move on the Omni One, punctuated with three experiences that let you move, walk across a plank to test your bravery, and a touch of archery for fun.
Because I love you folks, we're doing this as a double feature! The first full game run we're going to tackle is a game called Zero Caliber 2! This military shooter is so overstuffed with tropes and wooden acting that it practically wears digi-camo and wobbles on two wooden peglegs. Come watch me wobble around like a baby deer on brand new feet, and stick around for some truly inspired lines. Treadmill Tuesdays is, as you might guess, a show coming your way every single Tuesday!
Let us know down in the comments if you've got VR games you'd recommend, as we'll be trying a new one every week. Or let me know that I look absolutely goofy in this thing. It's not gonna stop me from using it, since I'm having an absolute blast, but you're welcome to share your thoughts on the subject! As always, stay tuned, and we'll see you on the next one.
