When Rockstar pulled back the curtain and unveiled GTA VI with a 26-minute extended trailer temporarily exclusive to Netflix, we were all waiting with meteoric anticipation to see how 11-plus years of painstaking development had shaped out. The first two trailers provided samples of the vibe GTA VI would exude, but with this extended look, we snuck a peek at what’s been hiding under the glossy exterior the first two trailers showed off. What was shown in these 26 minutes was definitely impressive, and expressed a surprising level of eye-popping details and a variety of activities to engage in. However, something was missing, something very integral to GTA’s core identity—a sense of actual fun.
Much has indeed changed since Rockstar’s previous GTA game. 13 years have swum by, and in that time our culture has changed a ton. Sure, back in 2013 social media was running rampant, but now it appears our culture has become very careful when it comes to offending people, especially businesses, because they want to make money and they won’t be able to accrue as much if they offend part of their audience. This is why I think GTA VI is tame, but I’ll delve into examples to prove my point.
