TerraMaster Releases Hybrid NAS and Backupper Utility

TerraMaster has been busy in June. They not only launched a free comprehensive data backup app called “TPC Backupper”, but also launched a new NAS heavyweight 8Bay 10Gbps Hybrid NAS — a 4 M.2 + 4 RAID storage solution. Let’s dig into the specifics of the D8 and this new backup utility.

TerraMaster D8 Hybrid—The Industry's First 8-bay USB3.2 Hybrid Storage

The D8 is an absolute beast. With up to 128 TB of storage, it’s capable of addressing four hot-swappable M.2 drives (something I’ve NEVER seen), and four spinning platters, with up to 10 Gbps throughput via the backplane. Even better, it’s also expandable! My mind is already racing at just how powerful this could be for the video work that I do, with high-speed access to both the storage and the backplane for realtime 6K editing. It has a few other goodies that raised an eyebrow.

On the back of the unit is, thankfully, a USB 3.2 Type-C for connecting to the device — hence the 10Gbps humblebrag (with another surprise — back to this later). What was a surprise, however, was the four position switch for your configuration. Either Single Mode, RAID 0, RAID 1, and JBOD — something usually selected via software. The 2+6 configuration could use some explanation, though.

The way this drive is configured is interesting. The four M.2 NVMe drives are built as a single disk to maximize speed, and boy howdy does it. The four spinning platters are divided into RAID 0/1, with the other two operating as individual drive bays. That’s 32TB of M.2 via 4 x 8TB, and 96TB via 4 x 24TB SATA — beefy. Here’s where things get really, really interesting.

Using that USB 3.2 port we saw earlier, you can connect to the USB port on another NAS (like the F4-212 we reviewed earlier this year) to expand your storage dramatically. This will allow you to further tier your storage, or just allow you additional space.

As great as all of this is, the best news is that it won’t cost you an arm and a leg. Despite being best-in-class hardware, and with a ton of processing power, the price is $299. The last generation QNAP will run you $50 more, so TerraMaster has them beat every which way you can measure it.

In addition to the new D8, they also announced a free backup utility. The TPC Backupper works for just about every DAS they make, but also just about every backup method you can imagine. Incremental, full backup, disk backup, cloud backups, image states, compression, splitting, merging, and and much more are all baked into this utility. The tool also uses the refreshed TOS 6.0 UI that we praised in our recent review. It’s available right now, so don’t just take my word for it.
