Phantom Blade Zero draws from real martial arts to build its combat and narrative

S-Game's director reveals how dragon dancers, drunken swordplay, and the philosophy of Wuxia shaped the upcoming action RPG

Phantom Blade Zero draws from real martial arts to build its combat and narrative

Phantom Blade Zero creator Qiwei Liang recently shared how his team at S-Game approaches the game's combat and story. They visited a Chinese dragon dance studio, captured the performers' movements with motion capture, and turned that choreography into a full boss fight. Another boss uses a drunken sword style, drinking mid-fight to power up and becoming increasingly unpredictable.

Liang broke the word "Wuxia" into two halves: "Wu" for martial combat, informed by visits to real martial arts schools, and "Xia" for the hero's spirit. S-Game also released a behind-the-scenes video titled "What Exactly is Wuxia," where Liang walks viewers through how the team worked to authentically represent Wuxia culture in the game. The video highlights the variety of fighting styles and real kung fu traditions they drew from to shape the combat and overall feel of the experience.

Take a look at the full video below:

The game is currently being polished ahead of its September 9, 2026 launch on PS5 and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.
