I missed the boat on the TurboGrafx-16 when it was released on August 29, 1989 (It had released as the PC Engine in Japan earlier in Japan on October 30th, 1987), but I can tell you one thing for sure, it had the absolutely best version of Splatterhouse. The six button controller for the Turbografx 16 meant it also had the best version of Street Fighter II. I could have easily bought the console for the amount of quarters I dropped into Ninja Spirit or Forgotten Worlds. There’s also Bonk’s Revenge, Dungeon Explorer II, and New Adventure Island (not a surprise, given that Hudsonsoft’s parent company Hudson was part of the game console design), The Zelda-like Newtopia, some great shmups, like Spriggan, Gate of Thunder, Super Star Soldier, Super Raiden, R-Type, Gradius II, Atomic Robo-Kid, and many more. It also featured some amazing RPGs like Ys and Ys II, as well as fun and unique titles like Pomping World (known as Pang on the Amiga) and Prince of Persia. I guess what I’m saying is I had serious envy for this console. Well, it’s time to rectify that as Konami has revealed the full line-up of titles that’ll ship with their TurboGrafx-16 mini when it ships on March 19th, 2020.
