Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 review — A monolithic achievement
Sandfall Interactive drops an award-worthy turn-based RPG on their first try

The Game

LONDON & Montpellier, France (April 24, 2025) - Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the highly-anticipated debut by French independent studio Sandfall Interactive, and published by Kepler Interactive (TchiaSifuPacific Drive), is now available to purchase worldwide on PlayStation 5Xbox Series X|S (available now with Xbox Game Pass) and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.
Featuring an original, fantasy world inspired by Belle Époque France, Expedition 33 delivers an emotional, cinematic story brought to life by an incredible voice cast of both video game and cinematic talent in both English and French, including Charlie Cox, Jennifer English, Ben Starr and Andy Serkis. Featuring innovative reactive turn-based battles and deep character build customization, players will embark on a journey across a world of wonder filled with stunning locations, secrets and challenging side content, connected by a fully navigable explorable world map.

The Soundtrack

The music in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 follows the emotion and story that the players will experience as they embark on their adventure with Expedition 33. A hybrid mixture of lyrical orchestral pieces, prog-rock boss themes and ambient soundscapes illustrate every corner of the game, from the bustling streets of the capital city Lumière to the deepest depths of the ocean. Each environment has its own soundscape with bespoke battle themes and custom themes have been written for every major boss in the game.
French composer Lorien Testard spent five years working on the game’s soundtrack, writing 154 songs spanning more than eight hours of music. Most of the music was written and recorded at Testard’s home studio, but a selection of songs were performed and recorded by the prestigious Curieux Orchestra at the Midilive Studios in Paris (pictured in the supporting images above).

The game’s soundtrack is divided into three acts, which closely follow the journey of its main characters. Players will hear an eclectic combination of instruments such as accordion, saxophone, bawu and Cümbüş as they embark on their Expedition, but it’s the voice that is central to the story and universe of Clair Obscur.
Vocalist Alice Duport-Percier is the singer behind many of the game’s most memorable melodies, such as those in the main theme, ‘Alicia’. Actor Ben Starr, who plays the character Verso, features in the song ‘Until Next Life’, marking his first vocal song in a video game. Vocalist Victor Borba, best known for his work on the battle theme for Devil May Cry 5, lends his talent to two rock-inspired songs, while Mezzo singer Axelle Verner also performs on a song.

Commenting on the soundtrack, Lorien Testard says:

“Scoring Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was an incredibly fun process, as the game’s universe is so rich that it allowed me to engage my imagination and creativity every single day. The music in the game was created to fully immerse the player in our world —to carry them away and invite them to resonate with the expedition and their journey.

Thank you for stepping into the world of Clair Obscur. Wishing you a wonderful adventure alongside Expedition 33.”
