Super Tactical Droid Commanders Kraken and Kalani are available now for the Separatist Alliance army for Star Wars: Legion. Having first appeared in The Clone Wars (2008) animated TV series, they have made their way to the tabletop. Ever popular with the Separatist Droid Army players, both Kraken and Kalani bring a lot to bring the Republic to its knees! Atomic Mass Games sent us the expansion, which is a re-issue of the previous models (from the standalone expansion), but which includes the new unit and upgrade cards.

Unboxing Super Tactical Droid Commanders

In the box, you get a sprue of the models, unit cards, order tokens, and command cards unique to the Super Tactical Droid Commanders. Like the previous expansion, there are multiple options for poses, depending on how you want to showcase them. Like with all AMG products, there are multiple cards with different languages as well.

Cards for Super Tactical Droid Commanders
While Kraken and Kalani may look similar, they have some different abilities that can support your army as you see fit.

Kraken
At 80 points, Kraken is a fighter and leader. Strategize allows Kraken to hand out Aim and Dodge, and override allows friendly units to ignore the AI keyword. Charge, Sharpshooter, and surge to crits help with combat because Kraken rolls red dice for both range and melee. Even though Kraken is supposed to be a leader, it’s pretty clear they like a good brawl.
Kalani
At a slight increase of 85 points over Kraken, Kalani is a puppet master who is there to support the droid troopers. Strategize 2 (so two units get aim and dodge) and Direct: AI Unit give Kalani a lot of latitude for controlling units. Exemplar (which Kraken also has) allows for Kalani or an allied unit to share aim, dodge, or surge tokens. While Kalani may not hit as hard as Kraken, the trade-off for manipulation of tokens and units seems pretty fair.
Command Cards
Regardless of whether you use Kalani or Kraken, they both have access to the same command cards. “They Too Will Suffer” is a 1-pip that forces your opponent to return a face-up order token to their bag and redraw a token of that rank the first time that round. “Preservation Protocols” is the 2-pip that hands out Dodge tokens and the Disengage and Impervious keywords. The 3-pip, “Do Not Underestimate Our Means,” has a Divulge, which grants 3 AI units Reinforcements, or, if it was not Divulged, 2 units with faceup order tokens get a Recover action, removing suppression tokens.
Expanding Your Army
Both Kalani and Kraken will fill a nice role as either a cheaper commander, or a secondary commander to General Grievous (standard or Wheel Bike), or even a Customizable Super Tactical Command Droid. Depending on which one I use, I can build my SuperTac to complement appropriately. Directing AI and Coordinating units is hugely advantageous in this game because it reduces (or eliminates) the variable of what is coming out of your order token bag. I think Kraken would be fun to pair with some brutish droids, and Kalani will work nicely with STAPs, Aqua Droids, and those lovely TSMEU-6 Wheel Bikes.
To the Battlefield!
I am really excited to build and paint up these pieces for my Separatist Alliance Droid Army, where I think they’re going to provide some cheeky and clever interactions on the battlefield. The more I take the guesswork out of what units I can activate and what they do, the better it is for maintaining board control on my side. Cold, calculating, and completely awesome.
