Unboxing Valkyrie and Elendil & Warriors Three for Marvel: Crisis Protocol

Famed heroes of Asgard bring glory and honor to the battlefield!

Marvel Crisis Protocol Valkyrie and Elendil & Warriors Three Character Pack

Valkyrie, Fandral, Hogun, and Volstagg are some of the strongest, fiercest, and iconic heroes to ever come from the realm of Asgard. Joining Thor, Loki, Heimdall, Malekith, and others, this expansion pack adds even more options to the Asgard affiliation. This is Valkyrie’s second piece for the game, with this time adding in her winged steed, Elendil. Like with the Howling Commandos, The Warriors Three is a single piece representing their combined power.

Atomic Mass Games has sent us a box to open and build. I make no promises that you won’t hear Richard Wagner’s ‘Ride of the Valkyries’ playing when you open the box, but let’s open it up and see what’s inside!

In the expansion, you get three sprues, which include the bases, character cards, team tactic cards, and Worthy Deed tokens for ‘Deeds Worthy of Song’ team tactics card. Like with all AMG products, there are multiple cards with different languages as well.

Here are the instructions for the expansion:

Cards for Valkyrie and Elendil & Warriors Three

Valkyrie and Elendil

Coming in at a manageable 4 Threat, Valkyrie and Elendil have 6 Health and are a size 4 (because pegasi/winged horses are huge) with Flight. Their power builders, Dragonfang (the sword) and Geirr (the spear), trade attack dice for range, with Geirr adding attack dice they’ve been moved or placed, like through the Take Wing ability. Because of the Asgardian trait, they’re gaining an extra power each phase, but they’re also gaining an extra through Guardian of Valhalla, when another allied non-grunt is Dazed or KO’d. So, with those abilities, plus the two power builders, you can ramp up power quickly to use Fury of Valyrior, which is meant to take down big threat targets, or Need a Lift?, which carries allied characters.

Valkyrie and Elendil bring a lot for 4 Threat, which is only 1 more Threat than the original Valkyrie. I feel like I am going to be reaching for her for my roster more often than not, especially with the ability to carry allies. She’s going to benefit from letting allies lead the charge first, allowing her to swoop in and deliver the final blow.

Warriors Three

Fandral, Hogun, and Volstagg are meant to get in there and get the job done. With 3 Threat, 5 Health, and the Asgardian trait, the only thing holding them back is their S speed (thanks, Volstagg). Of course, being carried by Valkyrie and Elendil is going to make your opponent be a little bit more cautious. Each of their melee attacks offer a little variation for combat. Stun, Bleed, Pierce, and Stagger can all be dished out, which gives you some options for how to keep your opponent locked down. You can even get a second attack in with Strike One for Volstagg, just don’t roll any skulls or else you’ll suffer damage. My Steel Shall Strike For Thee! is a great retaliation attack, and Grim Resolve helps them either move or heal after suffering wounds,  which means you really should have them up front and in combat.

A solid 3 Threat support piece, the Warriors Three can and should sit on an objective and defend it to the last. They’re not going to be Thor or Valkyrie, but they’ll carry their weight (ha) and do their part for Asgard.

Team Tactics Cards

Team Tactic Cards for Valkyrie and Elendil & Warriors Three

I want to briefly touch on these before getting into the building. Warriors’s Oath offers a PWYW for how much of the card you want to use, and since Asgardian build up power quickly, this really isn’t that costly of a card. Warrior’s Frenzy, for Valkyrie and Elendil, offers them a follow up throw attack after Dazing or KO’ing a character. Ride of the Valkyries (can’t you hear it??) get a placement and attack for 4 power. Of the lot, the most interesting is the Deeds Worthy of Song, which is played and set aside. After conditions are met on the card, you get a Worthy Deed token, and once you get two of them, you remove the card and score 2 Victory Points.

Building the Models

Valkyrie and Elendil & Warriors Three Sprues for building

Like with all recent Marvel Crisis Protocol models, the pieces go together smoothly and easily. With that said, as far as painting them is concerned, I would absolutely recommend doing sub assembly, where you paint pieces individually and then glue them together after painting. With the arrangement of the Warriors Three and Valkyrie atop Elendil, it’s going to be very difficult to paint certain parts that are being obscured by other parts of the model.

You’ll also notice that there are some pretty obvious seam lines that I would recommend filling with either sprue goo or gap filler, especially if you’re looking to paint these pieces competitively. Elendil for sure, because the seam line between the two halves goes right down the center. So, followed the aforementioned guide, I used some sprue glue and a mold line remover to smooth everything out and make it easier to paint.

I left the right wing off, so that when I reassemble the painting pieces, it’ll be easier to fit Valkyrie and not damage her or Elendil.

For the bases, I left those pretty much blank, except I removed the sword on Valkyrie’s base, as it’ll make the base a lot easier to paint. With the exception of Elendil, I put all of the other pieces on spare bases with strong, double-sided Gorilla Tape, which allows me to paint them a little easier when they’re only my paint holder.

Valkyrie and Elendil & Warriors Three Ready for Painting

To the Battlefield!

Both Valkyrie and Elendil and the Warriors Three bolster the defense of Asgard, and Midgard, and bring some mid-level threat options for your roster. With a heavy emphasis on melee and building power, both these pieces are surely going to help win glory and bring honor to your Marvel: Crisis Protocol games.
