EPOS H3PRO Hybrid review — EPOS stuns with their latest headset

While I’ll admit that I am far from an audiophile, I do appreciate great sound. Be it from a surround sound system or a well-made headset, there’s just something special that occurs when you are able to allow yourself to be fully immersed in a song or video game, forgetting the woes of the real world for a while. The EPOS H3PRO Hybrid provides just that – great sound which gives the audio production of a song or video game soundtrack room to shine, while allowing the listener to appreciate the mixing and subtle details which otherwise tend to get drowned out when that same music is played through lower quality systems.

Throughout the years I have become so accustomed to listening to audio almost solely through my built-in TV speakers that I tend to forget just how fantastic a well-made headset can sound, but the H3PRO Hybrid  reminded me of the subtle details I’ve been missing.  It’s no secret that I’m a fan of EPOS, having reviewed quite a few of their products in the past, so I had expected quality from the H3PRO, but still came away impressed with the wealth of options available and how crisp the audio was.

From the moment you open the clam shell box which houses the H3PRO you’ll notice the meticulous design and care that went into crafting this headset. Resting in thick foam padding, the H3PRO immediately impresses with its color scheme and overall aesthetic. The stainless steel headband slider is housed in thick and comfortable foam, while still retaining a lightweight feel. The ear cups are nestled in surprisingly thick padding which block outside noise while resting comfortably on your ears, allowing hours of use without pain or irritation. Every aspect of the design, from the look to the feel, is impressive and helps to distinguish the H3PRO in an over-saturated market of headsets.

But all the looks in the world don’t matter if the sound isn’t impressive. However, as I previously mentioned, the H3PRO excels in that aspect, providing crystal clear sound whether listening through Bluetooth on your phone, via dongle on your PS5, or through aux into your controller. Just as impressive is the microphone quality, which picks up without any background noise or static whether you are speaking on the phone or recording a video on your PS5.

The EPOS H3PRO Hybrid is a low-latency wireless headset which features a multitude of ways to connect and is compatible with the PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile phones. Included in the packaging is a USB dongle so you can wirelessly connect to your PS5 console, an auxiliary cord for connecting through a controller, and the ability to connect via Bluetooth. All methods work flawlessly and instantaneously upon connection. The second I inserted the dongle in my PS5 the sound immediately swapped to the headset. Likewise as soon as I held the Bluetooth button in on the headset, my phone found it and let me link and begin use. The ease of use really helps the H3PRO stand out when placed amongst other headsets.

To test the headset’s dual microphones’ quality, I recorded videos using the PS5’s capture function and made phone calls. Each method provided a clear recording with no background noise and avoided picking up subtle noises, like my light breathing between sentences that would otherwise hamper the flow of a recording. One microphone is attached at the end of the boom arm while a second microphone is embedded in the ear cup to help with voice pick-up, a combination which works remarkably well. Further helping ease recording is the microphone’s features, which allows you to mute the microphone by pushing the boom arm up and to activate the microphone by pushing it back down. The microphone is also magnetic and detachable, allowing you to remove it at will and even comes with a cover replacement to fill the gap left over when the microphone is detached from the headset.

Other features include superb active noise cancellation, ear pads that cup your ears and keep out ambient noise, over 38 hours of wireless battery life when using Bluetooth and 19 hours when you have ANC enabled, lag-free audio no matter the connectivity method being used, and access to the EPOS Gaming Suite which allows user to customize nearly every aspect of your sound experience, great for those with discerning ears.

While I’m not one to mess with something like the EPOS Gaming Suite, it is nice that access to it is included for those who are interested in utilizing that app. The Gaming Suite allows EPOS devices to make use of EPOS’ proprietary 7.1 surround sound, to customize the sound of their voice via tweaking a 9-band EQ, and more. Overall it is an impressive app, made more impressive by its relative ease of use even for those with little knowledge of sound mechanics.

While the market for headsets is at an all-time high, the H3PRO still manages to stand out thanks to its impressive design and features and is well worth checking out for those highly invested in pulling the best possible sound out of their equipment. The H3PRO currently has an MSRP of $279.00 and comes with a two year warranty and 30 day return policy.
