The last few years, I have been involved with Magic: the Gathering, from talking about Final Fantasy last year at Summer Game Fest to attending MagicCon in Atlanta. The team at Magic: The Gathering puts so much time into their sets, making sure they’re following not only the game’s rules, but the world they’re collaborating with for any given set. I had a chance to sit down with the developers and play a game where I ended up winning, unlike last year, when Sepheroth wrecked my chances near the end.

I played as Iron Man, red team, while my opponent played as Captain America, white team. The characters in each group are made based on their personalities, what team-ups they have in the comics, and more. So Iron Man teaming up with Black Widow and Spider-Man as part of the red team, who I was told was generally more aggressive, makes sense in this comic fan’s mind. I also loved the new abilities for each character as they fit the characters so well, such as Hulk, Quicksilver, and more.

The stakes were high as I didn’t want to lose again to the developers in back-to-back years at Summer Game Fest. Thankfully, I was able to get just enough damage in the last round to gain the victory, which was so, so sweet.
The art, like most MTG cards, looks amazing. Each super hero getting a chance at the spotlight with their cards looking as brilliant as you could expect at this point from the teams involved. While some characters will be getting multiple cards, others will still get at least one. The team actually made a tier list that they argued over a long time, thinking of which characters needed the most cards and making sure that even if a character wasn’t the “most popular,” they still got a card somewhere in the set.

Magic: The Gathering always does a great job with the art, but the gameplay, feeling so great even for a newb like me, made it even more exciting to jump into the Marvel Superheroes set! If you’re a fan of MTG or simply love Marvel Superheroes, this set will be a great one for you to pick up!
You can play this set starting June 26th and can preorder on their website or get more information about local events from your local card shop.
