A very quick preview of Metaphor: ReFantazio and Shinobi: Art of Vengeance on Switch 2

Two great ports

If you’re like me, you’ve had exactly one question and one question only about Metaphor: ReFantazio on Switch 2, so let’s get that out of the way up front. Yes, the game runs at 60 frames per second. At least in docked mode, I wasn’t able to experience the game portably, so this could be a Persona 3 Reload situation where the game swaps to 30 in handheld. I hope not, though. There were a few noticeable frame drops, but in this case I’d attribute that to the game not being done yet over anything else.

Having played through the game on PC at a gorgeous 4k and 120 fps, I could tell the Switch 2 version was a downgrade, but not a massive one. Textures weren’t as clean, but if I’m honest, that only added to the game’s visual style with something of a painterly effect on characters. Other than that, it feels on par with other versions of the game. I can’t wait to get sucked into the Crown Contest once more this November.

Shinobi I only got to spend a few minutes with as the event was ending, and I wanted to get Sonic Pico Park in too. What I played, in contrast to Metaphor, was portable-only, and it looked great, like a painting in the palm of my hand. Felt smooth as butter too, at either 60 or 120 fps. I couldn’t tell by eye here, unfortunately, and it’s always harder with 2D, but I’d certainly believe it’s 120. I missed out on this one, so I’m looking forward to playing it when it drops on Switch 2. As far as I know, the version I played was the full game too, so it shouldn’t be long.
