Warhammer 40K gets new edition, with new rules and a Blood Angels vs. Orks starter set

The long-awaited new edition brings some revised rules.

The Armageddon starter set for Warhammer 40K

Games Workshop closed out its annual Warhammer Preview show at Adepticon with a long-expected reveal: the company will be releasing a new edition of Warhammer 40K later this year. The announcement came complete with a new cinematic trailer set on the war-torn planet of Armageddon, with a contingent of Blood Angels Space Marines duking it out against a never-ending wave of green Orks. No release date was given for the new edition, but it will likely go live over the summer.

While the full set of rules changes were not revealed, it appears that 11th Edition is a refinement on 10th edition rules rather than an overhaul. All codexes from 10th Edition will remain valid when the new edition launches, although there will be 70 new detachments that players can use to build their army. Players can mix and match their detachments, allowing for more flexibility when army-building. Gameplay will also shift towards a focus on narrative, with the missions used in gameplay determines by which armies and detachments were selected.

As part of the reveal, Games Workshop also revealed that they will release a new launch box for the new edition, appropriately titled Armageddon. The box will feature new Space Marine and Ork models, with the cover art calling back to 2nd edition's launch box (which also featured Space Marines and Orks.) Two new models were revealed for the launch box, one a Space Marine with cobbled-together armor containing a mix of new and old components and the other an Ork Boy armed with a choppa, a slugga, and a shoota.
