Unboxing the Republic AT-RT and Clone Commandos for Star Wars Legion!

The All Terrain Recon Transport comes to Star Wars Legion straight out of the Clone Wars, along with a pile of Clone Commandos, because why not?

I just finished watching The Clone Wars for the first time, and I loved the episodes set on Umbara, which showed off tones of the AT-RT’s, which are a super nimble bipedal walker primarily used by the Republic Army. The Clone Commandos, which I fondly remember from the iconic Star Wars: Republic Commando, are an elite squadron of Commando units. Both of these expansions add depth and complexity to any Republic player looking to bolster their army.

What’s in the Boxes?

In the AT-RT box, you’re going to get the model, along with several weapon and posing options. I chose to attach the rotary blaster to the model because it’s cool (and the weapons on a model don’t matter in Legion for the most part). You also get upgrade cards for the Laser Cannon, Flamethrower, Linked Targeting Array, and Comms Jammer. Each provides different strengths and weaknesses.

For the Clone Commandos, you get 4 models and the cards which apply to them, which includes a Reconfigure card for their weapon and the weapon options for the models.

Building all of these models is fairly easy, but I do recommend reading the instructions for the AT-RT, as the legs can get confusing.

What about the Cards?

This is where the depth shows up. The Clone Commandos come with 2 unit cards, one for the Delta Squad (the classic ones from the game) and the other card represents the stock Clones.

Delta Squad does cost 100 points vs. the normal 75 points, but this brings some big benefits. Namely they cannot be suppressed or panicked, with high survivability via their health, shields, and free Recover actions. The Katarn Pattern Armor, which is equipped by both, allows the unit to transform 1 or more Wounds into just 1 Wound, which adds to the survivability. Complete The Mission allows the Commandos to place a priority mission token and gain the benefits of being near the token. The defensive benefit is to give them Surge:Block (this means your surge results will count as a block), and the offensive benefit gives the clones Surge: Critical 2 (this converts surges to crits). Love how powerful this is, and they are definitely staying in my Republic army.

The AT-RT gets Climbing Vehicle which allows you to climb on terrain, which is just sick, cmon! However, the important keyword for this unit is Scout, which allows you to perform an additional move of 1 speed. This means you can get the AT-RT across the board quickly, take an objective, and if you equip it with a Flamethrower, you get a Range 1 Blast, which allows you to ignore defensive cover, and attack with 2 black dice per model in the group.. Because the AT-RT is a vehicle with a free 90 degree pivot before or after turning…this is a defensive powerhouse!

Furthermore, the defensive dice for this unit are Reds, which are the best chance of rolling successes, and there’s a built in rocket launcher and grappling claw. This is a must in any army for maneuverability and diverse combat situations.

Should I purchase them?

As a player of the Republic, I’m fully in on both of these units. The Commandos not only strike a chord in my heart, but they are exceptionally powerful. And the AT-RT is the perfect objective controller.  Pick them up at your nearest game store, or grab them online.
