Sony Announces Plans to Bring PlayStation to China

Following the lift of the country’s long-held console ban, Sony has announced plans to launch PlayStation products in China.

Sony will be collaborating with Shanghai Oriental Pearl Culture Development to form two companies, one to manufacture and sell hardware and manage the services plus the sales, licensing, distribution and R&D of the software. Sony China will own 70 percent of the newly formed Sony Computer Entertainment, but only 49 percent of the newly formed company named Shanghai Oriental Pearl Sony Computer Entertainment Culture Development.

The announcement implies that many games will likely be censored when they make their way to China, stating that the joint venture “will introduce quality, healthy games that are suitable to China’s national conditions and the preferences of domestic players, as according to the relevant government policies.”
