Morrowind is free today on PC to celebrate The Elder Scrolls’ 25th anniversary [UPDATE – Extended through the weekend]

[Update 3/25/2019] After issues with players not being able to log into their accounts, Bethesda posted a tweet announcing that Morrowind will be free for anyone to claim through the weekend.

If you haven’t yet picked up Morrowind on PC, today is the best day to do so as Bethesda is giving everyone the game for free through their website. The version of the game will be the Game of the Year edition, which contains both expansions, Tribunal and Bloodmoon.

In order to redeem Morrowind, players have to do the following steps:

  • Create a free Bethesda.com account if they do not have one already.
  • Log into your account and use this code to redeem the game: TES25TH-MORROWIND

Afterwards, Morrowind will appear in their inventory and they will then have to download the Bethesda launcher in order to play the game. This is all part of the series’ 25th Anniversary Celebration, which includes a sale of up to 50% off other Elder Scrolls titles and add-ons.

The code to redeem Morrowind for free is only active today. For more information or to redeem the game, visit the official website.

  1. I tried this again a few months ago since it was on Gamepass and I was reminded of how horrible the UI was back then. Such a wonderful world but just unplayble.

@farley2k Yeah, and this is chiefly why I feel Morrowind is a game that really makes sense to remaster. But I find it really odd that Bethesda’s stance on it through Todd Howard is that they would rather players play it the way it is. Meanwhile they have no qualms about remastering Skyrim, a game that I feel doesn’t really need it.

I can understand their reluctance to remaster Morrowind due to its age, but on the other hand, I think this is why remastering precisely exists. Skyrim is the game that really took Elder Scrolls into the mainstream, and it’s quite natural for players new to the series to want to go back and play some of the earlier stuff after playing Skyrim. Well, wouldn’t it be great if those players could turn to a version of the game that isn’t so off-putting? I mean that not only in the graphical sense, but moreso in a technical sense. What a better way to honour the legacy than remastering the game that ushered Elder Scrolls into a new era. Without Morrowind, we wouldn’t have had Skyrim. I understand there are a lot of purists who feel the game shouldn’t be touched, but it can always exist alongside a remastered version, or even offer a retro mode like some remasters have done. I don’t see the harm in playing through the same story and gameplay using a modern engine with an updated UI, resolutions, models and textures.

And yes, there are modders attempting to recreate the game but they’ve been doing that for so long now that I don’t believe it will ever be released. At this point, I think Bethesda need to ramp up a lot of good will given the Fallout 76 debacle and I’d be surprised if they wouldn’t give in to remastering Morrowind at some point.
