TGIF: Gaming Trend’s Weekend Lineup

Seeing as how we are still in the outset of 2015, developers have yet to release any significant new titles this year. That will happen in a couple of weeks when we see the releases of the highly-anticipated Dying Light and the long-awaited remastering of Grim Fandango. For now, we must make due with delving into the treasure trove of games we got during the holidays last year.

2015 is shaping up to be an incredible year for amazing new video games, but it is important that we don’t get ahead of ourselves. We, as gamers, owe it to ourselves to enjoy the time we have with our current games, because that time is so precious and so short, as 2015 will soon completely overshadow all that came before it. To avoid getting too excited about what the future has in store, and forgetting about the great games we have already, here is what the GT Staffers are playing this weekend.

Josh Devlin, Reporter

I just finished moving out of my old apartment, but the moving process is far from over. All of my consoles are still in boxes, and I’m presently without internet (of course they were the first people I called). So this weekend–as I use a stack of boxes for furniture–I will be making almost no headway in unpacking my stuff, and probably just sit there in the clutter playing with my 3DS.

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS is what’s currently in the cartridge slot, so I guess that’s what I’m playing. Believe it or not, it’s kind of refreshing not having this overwhelming stack of video games glaring down at me as I sit there confused, contemplating what to play next. I might try leaving my games in a box and not taking a new one out until I’ve completed the one I’m currently playing. This is good. I feel good about 2015 in gaming for me … this feeling won’t last long.

I am grateful that new video game releases have been minimal over the past few weeks, as I’ve got a ton of catching up to do with my pile of games. Dragon Age: Inquisition, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Bayonetta 2, The Talos Principle, and The Ace Attorney Trilogy on 3DS are just a few of my unfinished titles that I’ll be playing through.

I also will be participating in Destiny’s Iron Banner event and preparing for the Hard Mode of the Crota’s End raid. I still can’t explain to anyone why in God’s name I am still playing this game, but I am.

First, accountability time – I lost 1lb since last week.   I missed two workouts (Tuesday and Wednesday) due to two deaths in our family / friends.  I tried to work out with Xbox Fitness to make up for it, but the Kinect decided “I see you, but you aren’t getting points for ANYTHING” as I watched the little meter drop all the way to zero.   I rebooted the Xbox One to no avail.  Ahhhh, technology.   I’ll make it up this weekend.

As for what I’m playing, I have an odd treat – Saints Row: Gat out of Hell.   I thought Saints Row IV was Volition taking off all the chains of sanity.  Nope…it’s this.   I’ll have a full review up when the embargo lifts next week.   I’m also tackling Grey Goo.  Sure, it’s a fairly terrible title for an RTS, but it’s from Petroglyph.  Petroglyph is the team that left Westwood after EA ate them, so they practically invented the RTS.  So far so great…the graphics are amazing, the story is unique enough, and I’m enjoying it.  What more can I ask for?   I’ll keep you apprised on how that turns out, and I’ll make some suggestions on names it might have had instead of Grey Goo.

Niko DelValle, Editor

Gaming is not just my primary concern this weekend, I’m chipping big chunks out of what’s left to write before I finish my novel’s first draft. I’m getting so close! Then after all that I’ll need to cut it down because I dramatically overwrite. Anyways.

I’m playing Galactic Civilization III off-and-on right now for a preview. I haven’t been able to play enough to tell you a significant amount about it just yet, but when I am, you can be sure I will. Other than GalCiv, I’m trying to get better at League of Legends before the beginning of the new Ranked season. I’m not sure what else I might play this weekend, I certainly have a few games to finish but… League of Legends!

On December 5, 1986, Josh was born into this world pink-faced and squalling. His only thoughts were, "WHAT IS GOING ON? WHO ARE ALL OF THESE PEOPLE? AND WHY THE HELL AM I NAKED?" 19 years later he bought an Xbox 360 and now plays and writes about video games. Life is funny that way.
