I was going to start playing again, downloaded it and everything.  Then I found out that subscribers get a 10% mount speed boost even in PvP... Done.

I have no problem with this at all.  They opened almost the entire game (8 of the 9 souls and all of the new expansion) to everyone in addition to increasing the coin/sell limits and decreasing chat/mail restrictions.  If they want to give the people who still pay $10-$15 a month a minor boost in a game that's always been centered on PvE then more power to them.  It's truly one of the least restrictive F2P games out right now.

45  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: MS Store: 1200 points ($14.99 value) for $4.99 on: May 29, 2013, 05:03:30 PM
I did two orders, had the money taken out but the Microsoft store page has no successful record of purchase (of course).  On top of my Xbox notification code not working either.

EDIT: As of June 2nd I've received email confirmation of the first order.  I'm going to assume the second will come in sometime in the next couple of days.
46  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Am I the only one that would like a good old fashioned pay to play MMO? on: May 29, 2013, 05:00:12 PM
Sub based models are basically dead at this point.  Just about every MMO that's gone F2P has been more successful that way.  KOTOR saw their monthly revenue double.  Games on the verge of shutting down are more popular than six months before the conversion.  I thought Rift might ride it out along Final Fantasy and WoW but even they're switching next month.  And forget Blizzard's Titan as it looks like it's not even coming out until 2016 at this point.

I think if you want a classic high fantasy sub based MMO then FF14 is going to be your only choice.

Pretty sure the last week sale starts tonight (usually Tues around 8 est).  Also remember some of the PS3 games include the Vita version for free (like Sly) which makes it an even better deal.

Ok, this queue is BS.  It's bad enough getting one of the packs and still waiting (expected on the first day of real open beta) but it keeps going up instead of down which is the actual irritating part.

I can't get in until the 27th but I will say their customer support is (surprisingly) top notch.  I had a problem where an empty STO account got linked to my perfect world account.  Around 4 hours I had that removed, my regular STO account linked and my Neverwinter pack added back to my account.  And that's using their email/ticket system.

52  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Ps3 deals going on? on: April 20, 2013, 04:06:48 PM
Your best bet is to buy the cheapest new PS3 you can find and then just put a new hard drive in it (if you're not happy with the size it has).  Super easy, no special software, no special cables or screws (special FU shout out to the x-box convoluted crap process), 15 min job.

OOh,second part of Phase 2,cool i hear Phase three is the PS3 beta

I wonder if it will be cross platform for the beta, the FF11 beta for the 360 was just for the 360,until the full game came out and then we transferred to other servers with PS2 and PC players

Third part of phase 2 is this coming weekend frown  I was really hoping for phase 3.

For some reason, I decided to give SWTOR a look this weekend.  I know it's cool to hate on, but I'll be damned if the story elements aren't the most compelling (by far) in the MMO genre.  As someone who plays almost entirely solo and couldn't give a rip about end-game, high level, grouped content, SWTOR is still pretty fun.  Started up an Imperial Agent, and it's been pretty awesome.  I'm also playing a stealthy ranged character for the first time ever (I'm typically a sword & board melee), so maybe it's just the change of pace that's appealing.  Regardless, I'm strongly considering subbing for a month or two to get around the F2P restrictions.

I'll agree, however, that I wish we could have just had a single player Star Wars KOTOR RPG.  frown

It has a lot of faults but if you play it as a single player story based RPG that just happens to have other people playing you'll probably love it.  Each of the stories are great, most of the game can be solo'd, other people are around to help if you need it and just about everything too hard to solo can be skipped if you want.  You could easily get a couple hundred hours out of it playing each of the main classes to 50 even if you never touched end game.  The biggest problem I had is the game is slightly linear once you get off the starting planet.  You have a little choice but nothing like...well WoW...where you could literally level two alliance characters to 60 and never hit the same zones due to the huge amount of zones, quests and different continents available.

They have made a huge number of changes in the past year though and it's in far better shape then it used to be.  I think the F2P is way too restrictive compared to others right now and the cash shop doesn't hide pay to win but it's the only star wars fix available smile

Price is not an excuse.  I paid under $30 for the season in Blu Ray.  I also subscribe to HBO mainly for GoT and True Blood.  I have to agree with the argument though that if you're willing to pirate it you probably wouldn't be buying it anyway.  And I actually do know people who pirate first and then buy if it they like it...I just don't have any judgement either way especially as someone who can afford you buy what I want when I want it vs low income/students/etc.

If anybody is in the PC beta, can you tell me how large the download is?(if you are allowed)..i know it will be different for the PS3 version, but it may give me an idea

Details from that link

Quote
•Plays more like the pre-mandate of heaven games with a grid style movement system instead of free roam.
•there are 12 classes (didn't tell me what they were) and then "advanced" classes for each of them. I suppose this is like the system in 6-7-8 where you do a quest to promote from a Knight to a Champion or whatever.
•there will be 23 dungeons.
•aiming for september release
•there is no training. When you level up you just get your skill points then and there.
•You still will level your skills and have to train to expert, master, and grand master. Expert and master you just go find the trainer and pay gold when you have the necessary skill points, and for grandmaster there will be a quest.
•It will be totally non-linear after the initial area where it teaches you how to play. Kind of like 7, where you were confined to the island until you completed the first quest.
•In the demo you never had more than 2-3 monsters at a time. I asked if this is representative of the whole game, and he said "it depends on the level. Sometimes you will be surrounded, sometimes it is just a few more powerful enemies." Was kind of vague.
•The movement is like Grimrock, but Grimrock was still a real time game. This is turn based 100% of the time, which imo makes the combat much more interesting.
•There is a skill bar, but its not like WoW or other MMOs where you have special attacks... the abilities that were on the skill bar were just melee attack, ranged attack, defend (idk what this did, never used it), and then you can put spells and potions on there too.
•I looked but didn't see any "self" magics in the skill trees of the characters I had, but I didn't pay attention to what classes I had in my party. its possible I just didn't have a character who could learn them.
•No blasters / sci-fi elements.
•There will be hirelings. You can have two in your party at once. They don't fight with you, just provide your party with a bonus. For a price of course.

Graphics look much better than I expected.  I'm definitely (but cautiously) looking forward to this.

68  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Worthwhile upgrades... SSD and new graphics on: February 07, 2013, 03:05:33 AM
If you're planning on keeping the bulk of the computer then plan on installing 64 bit windows on the new SSD (new fresh install should be the only option considered) if you don't have it already.  After the SSD upgrade the memory to 8 GB (memory is dirt cheap now) as long as the MB supports it.

Other things to consider...make sure the MB supports SSD.  I had a MB and an E8400 (around 4 years old) and it simply would not work as a system drive.  With the age of your MB that's a real concern.  Also, you do have SATA II.  Won't make much difference and SATA III will auto downgrade to support it but it's something to be aware of.  I would double and triple check compatibility though.

Excellent choice on the 7870 and honestly after a couple days of using the second monitor you'll wonder why you didn't start using two of them years ago.

70  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [book] Wheel of Time 14: A Memory of Light on: January 15, 2013, 02:44:22 AM
Why the ebook delay:

Quote
author Brandon Sanderson‘s explanation for the eBook delay:

This is not my decision or Tor’s decision, but Harriet’s. She is uncomfortable with ebooks. Specifically, she worries about ebooks cutting into the hardcover sales. It isn’t about money for her, as the monetary difference between the two is negligible here. It is about a worry that her husband’s legacy will be undermined if sales are split between ebooks and hardcovers, preventing the last book of the Wheel of Time from hitting number one on either list. (Many of the bestseller lists are still handling ebooks in somewhat awkward ways.)

As the last books have all hit number one, she doesn’t want to risk one of these not hitting number one, and therefore ending the series on a down note. (Even though each Wheel of Time book has sold more than its predecessor, including the ones I have worked on.) I personally feel her worries are unfounded, and have explained that to her, but it is not my choice and I respect her reasoning for the decision. She is just trying to safeguard Robert Jordan’s legacy, and feels this is a very important way she needs to do so. After talking about the issue, we were able to move the ebook up from the originally planned one-year delay to instead come out this spring.

The worst part is the lack of an ebook release actually hurts some of the new lists which now have a combined paper/ebook sale total.

As for the book I'm now close to half way through.  It's surprising how much has happened and where it's at (considering I'm only half way through).  I don't know if I should be worried or excited that there's still half a book left.  So far it's been an excellent end to an epic series that I started over 20 years ago when I bought the first over-sized paperback Eye of the World.  Can't wait for the new spoilers included thread once people start finishing it smile

VERY painful to the publisher. ebook are almost pure profit.

Almost? Storage costs next to nothing, duplication costs next to nothing, transmitting costs next to nothing, and you can easily put up infinite copies anywhere in the world in a matter of seconds.

To not release a ebook version the same day a hard cover comes out is just stupid. Period. There will be a scanned copy up on the interwebs somewhere in a day at most if they don't. Always.

Yes, but people can't go down to kinkos and photocopy a book - while I'm sure there is a counterbalance, I'm sure that ebooks have a much higher piracy rate, and staggering the ebook release is probably for that very reason. It could also be due to honoring the wishes of either Jordan's widow, or his own wishes in a series spanning over three decades and 14 books.

People don't go down to Kinkos...they have dedicated (and cheap) book scanners now.  The full eBook was on the torrents the day of release.  I'm personally fine with honoring the wishes of the widow or Jordan...I was just pointing out that it's a massive amount of lost sales especially with the explosion of eBook readers over the past year.

Anyway, the book itself it great so far.  It's very quick and everything is moving along at a very brisk pace.  No spoilers yet and I'm still a couple days from finishing.  Still a little scared when thinking about how it's going to end.

I know a lot of people get slow download speeds from PSN, but I've always gotten really fast speeds from them.

I get excellent download speeds but only on my Vita...it took under 30 mins for me to download all stars (~1 GB).  My PS3 downloading on the same connection is about half the speed.  Both wireless.

No kidding! I am even avoiding looking at chapter titles at the beginning of the book. I I even suspect there is a spoiler on a forum I don't even look at the thread.

I have read the first 100 pages and stuff is happening fast but I'm reminded, again, that Sanderson is a very good writer but he doesn't have the same skill as Jordan. You can whine about skirt smoothing and braid tugging all you want but with a series that is this size, Jordan did an amazing job of having unique traits, no matter how annoying.

Did anyone see all the negative reviews on amazon just because there is no ebook? Lame.

I loved Jordan, I love the setting and I loved the series but I will continue to whine about the skirt smoothing and braid tugging.  Honestly though when you look at 14 books and over 3.5 million words it wasn't used all that much.  I did a quick check and braid was only used 47 times in book 9 smile  I'm going to miss the series.

The no eBook thing until April is completely stupid though.  It was a huge mistake, the publisher should not have listened to the widow who doesn't understand the new medium and it will cost both of them quite a bit of money in the short run.  It is already available on the main sites in multiple formats and every one of those downloaded is at least a potential loss of a $20 sale.

I love my Vita but unless you're a huge fan of certain titles (like Persona) you're probably better off with the 3DS.  The only thing that might change that would be if you're a PS+ member and you get the free Vita games with it (currently Uncharted, Wipeout and the older PSP version Final Fantasy Tactics).  Of course you'll need a bigger memory card for those so again that's another $50 right there.

Hi everyone!

As you know, we take player feedback very seriously and we wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for being a part of our Free-to-Play transition.

When Game Update 1.5 was on PTS, we heard your feedback and increased Quickbars for Free-to-Play Players, increased Warzones from three to five per week, and reduced the Cartel Coin temporary bind.

We want to let you know that we are constantly listening to you folks, and we’ve heard your feedback regarding limited Quickbars for Preferred Status Players.

This is why, after an upcoming patch that is scheduled for next week, Preferred Status Players will be given two additional Quickbars (for a total of four) that will immediately improve their gameplay experience.

We’ll have more details for you – including information for Preferred Status Players that have already purchased extra Quickbars - once the change goes live.

Thanks again for your feedback and please continue to provide it for us!
