I finished this on Saturday night. Overall it was a fun game but I enjoyed the first half much more than the second, the level design and combat scenarios just started degrading at that point. I enjoyed the prolonged narrative sequences, where you're just exploring the area and talking to people, it reminded me of Starbreeze games like Riddick, The Darkness, and Syndicate, all of which I greatly enjoyed.

This was a great first effort by Machine Games as a new studio, I'm glad the game was successful for them and I look forward to their next project.

If I was reviewing the game (which I suppose I am!) I'd give it a 3/5.

Good to know!

There was a Sony press event last night and many outlets played Remastered, I enjoyed Polygon's impressions on the updated graphics. What makes me nervous, though, is the fact that they're including a 30FPS lock, which indicates a wavering framerate. I'm hoping the lock is geared towards multiplayer...

I have it downloaded, but haven't tried it yet.  I don't think I realized there was a co-op mode.  Will have to play with my daughter.

Yep, the co-op mode was added for the PS4 and PC versions (this originally released on the Ouya).
126  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I urge you to experience Towerfall's local multiplayer on: July 15, 2014, 07:29:05 PM
I haven't done much multiplayer gaming in the last 3-4 years. I've always attributed it to a lack of time - I don't want to schedule gaming sessions and I don't want to spend the time to get good at anything. However, after my session with Towerfall I realized it has a lot to do with the games themselves. My friend wanted to celebrate getting a job at Blizzard by playing some video games together, so I invited him over last weekend with Resogun, Mercenary Kings, Trine 2, and Towerfall Ascension on PS4 as our options (all free PS Plus indie titles!).

Each game is great for local co-op, but Towerfall is by far the most fun. We played for about three hours, going through the coop quest mode and facing each other 1 on 1 in deathmatch. The gameplay is made up of arena based combat that, to me, draws from Super Smash Bros. and PacMan. The action is fast-paced but very strategy oriented, there's a great balance of needing to be nimble with your movement, accurate with your shooting, and intelligent with your approach. It's a very simple game up front but, similar to SSB, gets deeper the more you play it.

With just my friend and I we had a blast with Towerfall, the deathmatch would have been even more fun with 3 or 4 players. It's easily one of the best local multiplayer games I've ever played, partly because it's so easy to pick up and grasp.

The game is out on PS4 and Steam. Find some friends, grab your mom, find a local gaming group, and play this game.

I'm still making my way through this on PS4 after starting it on release date. I guess getting married and moving take up all your bloody time!

Anyways, I was loving the game up to the moon station level. Terrible level design. I'm hoping I'm in a third act lull and things will pick up during the final stretch.

I quit half way through.  It just didn't grab me and I am an adventure game fan.

I didn't like it. I thought the puzzles were lame and the gameplay extremely repetitive, even compared to the usual amount of backtracking in most adventure games.

I didn't think the gun sounds were too low, but the old guy whose always yapping at me over the radio is hard to hear when there's action going on, I usually rely on subtitles.

I'm really, really digging the game so far. I'm still extremely early in the campaign, but I came across the first collectible letter and was delighted at how well-written and interesting it was. The story of the soldier in Africa being ambushed was riveting. I hope the letters maintain that level of quality, I'll be searching every nook and cranny for them.

That sentiment holds up regardless of which machine you own. If you own an XB1, why buy a PS4 or PC? If you own a PS4, why bother with a PC or XB1? I think it's a good problem to have... the fact that there's not much of a content delta between each platform.

Of course, that all goes out the window if your primary focus is F2P or obscure indie titles. Then you should probably stick to a low/mid spec PC.
One console is roughly as good as the other but PC games offer better graphics, performance, customization and are cheaper 99% of the time.  That said, I do miss the days of good console exclusives.  It made things much more interesting and helped drive the industry.

That's assuming every PC owner has a PC that's powerful enough to output better graphics than a PS4 or XB1 version. I would look somewhere between the minimum and recommended specs of a Valve game, because they unquestionably have more user hardware data than any other game company, and assume that's the range most PC gamers exist in. Going off that, I would say that for most people the PS4 and XB1 offer comparable if not better graphics than what their PC can produce.

I agree, though. It was fun debating Mario Vs. Sonic, Final Fantasy Vs. Zelda, etc.

I wish you'd remember that too, because that's complete bullshit. The game is long. It's estimated that a normal playthrough would take 15-20 hours, but it looks like mine will take more than that. This is an extremely long campaign for an FPS.

I'm curious, how does the length compare to Riddick and The Darkness's campaigns?

I just started playing this on my iPad Air last week and am truly loving the game. Although, sometimes I feel like winning has more to do with how good your cards are and luck of the draw more than strategy. But that's probably a common newbie perspective.

Does your hero's level decrease over time? I got my priest to level 10, which didn't take that long. I haven't played in a couple days, should I expect him to have dipped a little?

Hero level never decreases. Only rank increases and decreases (but not below level 20 each season if you pass it) when you play ranked mode.

I agree with Wonderpug, this game is definitely not pay to win.

When it comes to spending your hard earned gold, I recommend playing in the Arena.  You're guaranteed a pack, get great experience with different classes and cards, and will likely get some dust or something else at least.

Additionally, I'm all for playing whatever class you enjoy the most, but thought you would like to know that the Priest is currently at the bottom when it comes to winning percentage in constructed ranked games.  Plenty have played Priest all the way to Legend, but since you're new I thought you would like to know you're playing the weakest class.

In that case I should continue playing the Priest. If Hearthstone is anything like WoW, the weakest class gets a boost at some point and becomes overpowered for a while smile

I seriously don't get it either. It's like people don't remember other launch windows...
Those are multiplatform games.  People who complain about the lack of games are usually people who already have a powerful PC and have no reason to buy either console right now.  As a predominantly PC gamer I see no reason to buy a PS4 now, or unless e3 amazes, anytime in the near future.

It's 60, and I havent noticed any hiccups so far.

That's good, makes up for the low res textures. Or whatever it is that's making the game look so last-gen.

I played through the intro segment... or at least part of it. And then the game said it ran out of content and that I need to wait for it to install (this was a digital purchase, obviously). There was nothing in the dashboard that indicated the game was still in the process of installing, but there's no way for me to continue playing right now. Whatever it's doing I hope it's done tomorrow night when I try play again.

Agreed!  I had pretty much dismissed the game entirely but the reviews so far are making me interested.

The Metacritic isn't very high, around 78-79, but reading Ron's review and also watching the Polygon video review makes me want the game. I'm intrigued by the story, characters, and setting, moreso than the gameplay. Not that the gameplay looks bad or anything, but it's a first-person shooter which is nothing to get excited about.

After slogging through Uncharted Vita just for one, I asked myself if it was worth the hassle.

When achievements first came around in Xbox games, I think I tried hunting for a few and ended up asking myself that very question. And the answer, for me, was that it was not worth the hassle. I'm not just talking about MP or cross-platform achievements like with Uncharted Vita, I'm talking in general. Since that initial effort, I've never gotten an achievement/trophy outside of playing the game normally.

It might warrant a separate thread, I'm really curious to hear how you all feel about a game that you hunt down achievements in vs. just playing it straight through.

It's important to keep in mind that the Xbox One has sold 76% more units than the Xbox 360 did in its first 6 months, which means it's sold about 5.6m units compared to the 360's 3.2m in the same time span

They've not sold 5.6 million to customers.  They've shipped that many to retailers.  MS really did a great job confusing  people with that 5M number they put out there when Sony announced selling 7M to actual customers.

Either way the point is the same, MS is doing much better this generation (so far), purely from a sales standpoint. I'm not sure what the profit margins are on the One Vs the 360, though.

I'm willing to bet that had the price points been swapped, if the PS4 was $500 and the One was $400, it would be the One with 7m sold and PS4 with 5m shipped. Now that they're more evenly priced, it can be a battle more focused on who has the best content.

Also, 8 of the top 10 best-selling console games in April were on a MS console, according to NPD (see the source I linked earlier). Of course, NPD doesn't track digital so there may be more Sony games in that list then they are reporting, but it still gives you directional results.

Microsoft isn't doing bad, they just aren't doing as well as Sony. And despite all the drama surrounding the Kinect announcement, MS's trailing hardware sales has to do with costing $100 more than the PS4. If anything, the lesson for them isn't that they shouldn't have tried to integrate the Kinect with the Xbox One, it's that they should have figured out how to price their product more competitively.
