I'm not sure they could have chosen a better time to launch this game in 2 weeks.

Seriously... I wonder what the pre-order numbers look like. I think after the dust settles from the PS4 and XB1 launches we'll see a lot more attention paid to this game, assuming it's as amazing as the videos make it out to be.
122  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [wii u] Super Mario 3d World on: November 09, 2013, 07:08:45 PM
I think I know what Turtle is talking about. The textures of these games look more solid somehow, which is a good thing.
123  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 6 days until launch. Which system are you getting? on: November 09, 2013, 06:50:47 PM
I want an Xbox One during the launch window but I know I'll want a PS4 for the long run, I'm not willing to have both. Not wanting both isn't even a money thing, I just don't want that many consoles in my living room as I'll eventually succumb to the Wii U as well. I loved Ryse at E3 and it would serve well as my first next-gen console experience. Dead Rising 3 looks like a blast and the amount of zombies on-screen at any given time is crazy. And then there's Crimson Dragon, spiritual successor to Panzer, which I also played at E3 and enjoyed. I only have the PS4 pre-ordered, though, and there's not a single exclusive launch window title I'm interested in. I know the exclusives will come soon enough from Sony's stable of studios, but they aren't here yet...
124  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Breaking bad as good/bad as usual! on: November 08, 2013, 08:32:34 AM
I really didn't like that they decided to brutally torture Jessie before ending the series. I mean, the guy has taken a beating throughout the show, but never outright tortured (physically and mentally - his beatings and the murdering of his ex in front of him). AND enslaved. I thought that was a pretty classless route to go with a character we care for. It really sours my feelings on the entire show because it didn't need to happen, it didn't add any additional gravity to the already dire situation. It was fan service in the worst way, as far as I'm concerned.

I also didn't care for the ending aside from the fact that it tied things up. I suppose Walter and Jessie felt even, since Jessie was responsible for Hank being killed and Walter for him being tortured and his ex-girlfriend being murdered. So there was no reason for either one to kill the other.

Ah well. Brilliant show but like most shows of its caliber, the last few seasons fell off. Actually... it was mainly part one of the final season that disappointed, part two was bad finally being broken.

125  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Wii] Legend of Zelda: The Skyward Sword on: November 03, 2013, 04:35:58 AM
The first 4-5 hours of the game were my favorite. I eventually gave up because I got frustrated... I had to blow up a wall but the textures are so low-res that I couldn't tell there was a crack in the section of the wall where the bomb was supposed to explode. That drove me nuts.
126  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] Ender's Game on: November 02, 2013, 07:45:43 AM
I really liked the simulation battle scenes and I thought they did a great job developing Ender's character. Overall it's a decent enough sci-fi flick and the two people with me who hadn't read the book (I have) liked the movie a lot. I did NOT like Harrison Ford and the actress who plays Captain Anderson, they were not interesting whatsoever and their acting and dialogue was as flat as Louisiana.

It's good that they cancelled it. I put a few hours into the alpha that Isgrimnur hooked me up with. It was NOT good whatsoever.

When did Nintendo start putting out bad games? I'm not the most passionate Nintendo fan in the world, but I remember back in 2001 when I was working at an EB Games agreeing with a co-worker that Nintendo had never put out a bad game before (as far as the general consensus was concerned). Times have certainly changed.

Played it at PAX with 4 players.

It's really good. They also really toned down the players screwing over other players aspects of previous games. Although it's probably as much from the game being 3D, so everyone's not stepping over each other's toes.

That's good to hear. I don't intend to play with more than one other person at a time but I wasn't a fan of that aspect of NSMB.

Overall, yeah, but the Wii U is still dry I would say.

I should also add that, while this game looks like a run-of-the-mill shooter as far as mechanics, it does look like it'll have an interesting world to explore. I like what I'm seeing in the trailers.

That's kind of a best of both worlds situation. There's people out there with serious hard ons for 60fps. 60fps is great, but not needed for everything. I'd still rather have better graphics in certain cases. But in MP, 60fps is very helpful.

I have a HUGE hard-on for 60fps. I've tried acclimating myself to 30fps gaming by limiting the framerate in my PC games to 30, but it's a futile endeavor... it's like night and day to me. Until 60fps is the standard on these consoles I won't take them seriously.

I'll still be buying Killzone, though, as I'd like to invest in the platform's exclusives. It is, afterall, the reason I'm buying a PS4.

Resurrecting this thread as I'm looking at SSDs.

With the PS4 and a graphics card upgrade looming, my budget is tight but I can still squeeze in a SSD upgrade. I'm looking at the Samsung 840 series 120GB drive.

Is it recommended to keep the OS and games on a separate drive the way I'm currently doing that with my SATA drives? My idea is to get one now for my OS and productivity software, but keep games on my 1TB SATA, and in a few months get a second SSD and install my games there.

I'll still keep the 1TB SATA around for media.

Stupid China's terrible and corrupt labor and business culture. I hate having to worry about this with every big purchase.
The worst thing about this particular instance is that consumers get screwed either way because there's not a lot of choice when it comes to games consoles. We don't have much power to influence the console manufacturers here. Only for electronics where there is actual choice do we get the chance to make a difference. I know Apple uses Foxconn extensively, despite getting grilled about it in the media multiple times. Don't buy iPhones or iPads. Buy competing products that don't use labor practices that equate to slavery. I think some of their competitors do the same thing (Samsung maybe?) but I don't remember the details at the moment.

All of them do it. ALL of them. Don't buy the horseshit that it's just Apple. Our electronics empire is built on the back of cheap asian labor, and it's not going to stop until China changes their labor laws

Motorolla builds their phones on cheap American labor - link.  icon_lol

I have to have faith that Valve knows what they're doing, but that video did not convince me of much.  It mostly just looked like using a trackpad on a laptop, which is a pretty crappy experience in my opinion.

I think this may work better as the trackpads are better placed, and unlike a trackpad on a laptop these can be positioned better.  I still have my doubts, but that video helped allay some of them.

I've seen co-workers using Apple's magic trackpad who much prefer it over a mouse. Plus there's the haptic feedback on the Steam controllers which really make the difference.

I figure when I see this for 99 cents I'll grab it just to check out the atmosphere, and probably the speed hack to make the speed at least the same as HL2.

You don't need the speed hack and if you do it's really not a game you should be bothering with, even for 99 cents.
I would disagree and say the environments are worth seeing for a $1, playing the way the developers intended, however, is not.  Speed hack away!   icon_razz
Why would you waste your time with the rest of the game to see some of the environments rather than watch high-res videos or look at screenshots? The caves last maybe 10 minutes, tops. I don't know, I guess I'm coming from the perspective of every gaming hour being precious, the few that I have left these days.
I guess because itís a bit like sightseeing?  You could watch a video of almost any vacation spot on earth but wouldn't you rather explore it yourself instead of watching a video?  Plus youíre not really going to know if you like the game or not unless you try it for yourself.  I loathe the game but that doesnít mean everyone will; a dollar isnít much to find out.

According to a lot of people, Dear Esther is just a video  Tongue

I never got to play these games so it'll be nice to experience it in new form. The interview says it's going to be a pretty straightforward remake, but I sure hope they decide to make items you can interact with eminent. Getting stuck because I didn't click on every pixel on the screen is what kills adventure games for me.

I finished this last night. I actually fell asleep twice towards the end which is the first time in my life I've ever fallen asleep while playing a game. That's not to say I didn't enjoy the game because I did, I loved the sense of mystery and the atmosphere. And the caves! Oh, those caves...  drool

It's quite short, though. I think I paid less than $5 for it during a Steam sale, I hope no one paid more than that.
155  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: EA & Starbreeze present Syndicate on: October 06, 2013, 04:50:35 PM
I just finished the game and absolutely loved it. The world is extremely well realized and the whole time I was playing I was reminded of Mass Effect, it even had a codex (although, not named a codex) with tons of reading material. The shooting felt great and combined with the DART overlay and special abilities I ended up having fun in every combat scenario. The story itself is interesting and deep thanks to the codex, with Brian Cox (Stryker from X-men 2) playing the role of the corporate villain.

My only grievances with the game stem from the shoddy quality of the PC port. I had issues with mouse/keyboard mapping, graphical oddities, and crashes. It's quite a testament to Syndicate that I was willing to play through it despite the technical issues, because normally I would just delete from my hard drive and never think about it again.

I haven't tried the coop mode which a lot of people say is excellent, but I'm not big on multiplayer gaming (I'm just lazy about finding good people to play with) so I wouldn't be the best judge anyhow.

I played Bioshock Infinite right before Syndicate and if I had to choose between the two, I would most certainly choose Syndicate.

Just finished this, and while it certainly had its moments i have to agree with Ridah that it felt a little off, infact i know its set before Bioshock 1,but in some places it felt like it was developed before Bioshock 1 as well

I did really love the skylines, they were quite cool, but overall i think i liked both Bioshock 1 AND 2 over this

The story was decent enough, typical ending though from these games TBH,i failed to see much connection actually to Columbia and Rapture, was there supposed to be?,even the Handymans didn't shout out Big Daddy to me,but maybe its not supposed to

It took the story ending for me to realize I really liked it, but the first chunk of the game was NOT drawing me in. And Irrational needs to hire better mechanics people.
