121  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/360/XB1]Respawn's Titanfall on: February 15, 2014, 01:18:20 AM
I've only played a few hours so far but it's a lot of fun. Most people, including myself, don't have the wall run and double jump hard-coded into their routines yet, so I haven't seen a lot of vertical momentum in the combat. The Titans are very, very interesting. You have a lot more access to your Titan than I was expecting, at least in Attrition mode which is all I've tried so far. I would say probably 30-35% of the match you will have your Titan.

I can see this game having the potential to be one of the best multiplayer shooters ever made. This is the thing to bear in mind though: If multiplayer shooters never did anything for you before, or you've gotten burnt out on them over the years, or you don't have the time to spend honing your skills on a regular basis, Titanfall won't change anything for you. I used to play Counter Strike religiously, but now when I try to play MP shooters I fatigue very quickly. It's no different in Titanfall - I find myself fatiguing in about as much time as I would playing other MP shooters. So while it might be an amazing MP shooter, it's still just that.

For those of you who live and breath the likes of CoD, BF, Counter Strike, etc., I think you're about to discover your new obsession.

Good to know I'm not the only one experiencing the issue, here's someone else's impression:

As far as performance goes, I did notice a slight problem with vertical sync. It seems to make the camera jitter if you have either double or triple buffering v-sync on.

Investigation continues!
123  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/360/XB1]Respawn's Titanfall on: February 14, 2014, 07:03:52 PM
Hmm, having an odd issue with the PC version. It has something to do with VSync - even though I'm getting a rock solid 60FPS, it feels like I'm experiencing framerate drops. When I disable VSync the problem goes away.

I'm trying to investigate but not many people have the game yet.

I've never played an inFAMOUS game before, but from what I read about Second Son's good/bad paths, it seems to have a genuine effect on the narrative, dialogue, and character relationships. Did the first two games not pull this off well?
126  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/360/XB1]Respawn's Titanfall on: February 12, 2014, 10:19:35 PM
The game certainly looks amazing. I haven't seen such ubiquitously positive feedback since... GTA V. Still, not too many games can achieve that.

From what I've read, the Japanese console market has been in decline for some time. I'm sure the PS4 will sell, but consoles in general aren't doing great over there.

Not sure anything that isn't small and cute sells in Japan.

You're buying the Xbox One version digitally?

3 hours in, and I'm absolutely loving it...and this is coming from someone a) with zero investment in the Metal Gear games and b) who typically doesn't like action games very much.  This one is completely absurd, but a hell of a lot of fun.  My only real gripe is with the sometimes wonky camera, but it only cause me problems a couple of times.  The combat system is incredibly fluid (no surprise, given the devs), it looks incredible on my new gaming rig, it's alternately corny, ridiculous, hilarious, and pulse pounding, and the set pieces are fantastic.

I'm definitely rooting for you to enjoy the game, Gratch. It probably was just something that didn't click with me.

Sounds like that's the case.

Save your judgement until you finishing playing through it. What difficulty setting are you on?

I just got a new graphics card that includes a code for this, but I already have the game on PS4. Selling the code for $25 and accepting Paypal.

Thanks!

I feel like the Gears of War franchise doesn't get enough credit for how far the game play and level design advanced between the first and second games.  Maybe it's because there's no one major change you can point to, but rather a thousand subtle tweaks that collectively made a big difference.

Still need to play Gears 3, though.  I really liked that second game -- maybe I'll put that next on the list after my in-progress stuff is finished.  ATB hasn't given me a bad game recommendation yet!

-Autistic Angel

I agree with this. I think GoW and CoD in particular modernized the shooter genre considerably.

Go get 3 now. It can be had for cheap. Best game of the series both SP and MP (but especially  MP).

I already gave away my 360 so unless they port it to PC or PS4, that ship has sailed for me. I played 2-3 hours into the campaign at a friend's house, it seemed decent enough but I think, like many people, I had already checked out of the GoW franchise at that point.

I'm quite interested in this one, but not at full price.  Will pick it up on a Steam sale someday.

I respect where they were going with the combat system and the design of the character models is phenomenal. But it's not a good game... the people saying otherwise are doing so either because its a Metal Gear game or because of their Japanime obsession.

The game records my play-through at 6.5 hours, not sure if that's counting VR missions. And it's definitely not accounting for retries which would easily add 30% more time. I spent like 3 hours just on the final boss sequence

I'm mostly barreling through this game to see it through as I'm not enjoying it a whole lot. Raiden is a cool character from a superficial standpoint, but the writing and narrative is god awful. Coming fresh off my second play-through of Bioshock Infinite isn't helping the matter.

To be fair, I'm not a fan of games with a heavy emphasis on mechanics. This is probably a dream game for those who love deep and intricate combat engines, as well as gratuitous violence.

Oh, and the camera is horrendous.

What's everyone's next big PS4 purchase, anyhow? Mine's been collecting dust. It's surprising how much better the PC platform is than any of the consoles, strictly speaking in terms of the flow of quality releases. The PS4 has been dry since launch week, but on my PC there's something new worth purchasing on a weekly basis. Not to mention all the sales. This has only become apparent to me recently because I'm using a console again (I hadn't touched my 360 and PS3 in ages), plus I've got my PC connected to a TV and booting straight into Steam Big Picture mode while mainly using a 360 controller for games, so it feels like another console. The delta wasn't so obvious when my PC was being used in a more traditional PC fashion.

If you want to compare apples to oranges, good for you. BC has meant the ability to play your old games on your new system. PS3Phat60GB did it, older PS3 emulated it, and 360 did too (select titles).

Wii *was* BC to GC.

Stuff you rebuy is a rerelease. It isn't compatibility, its programmed on the new platform. So opinion on that is pretty open/closed on that - BC is new being set up to use old, not reselling old on new.

Are you saying a game isn't a product?

Technically you can label anything a product. But in this case I'm calling the console the product and the game the content. It's just semantics, I know, but is there really anything else to argue about in forums? smile

Sony isn't hindering the future of games distribution. They have pushed it on the PS3 with their Day 1 Digital on PSN and with having all digital buying ability on the PS Vita. If you want to not ever buy a disc/cart with a PlayStation product you can.

Same goes for Nintendo at this point. I'm not sure if it's the case for the Wii U, but I haven't need to buy a physical game for my 3DS since launch day.

I'm a few hours in so far and it's not exactly knocking my socks off. It feels like a very clunky version of DMC. Not sure I understand the design choices here - fast moving character who covers lots of ground very quickly fighting in confined spaces, and throw in a mediocre camera for good measure.

It's got some PC port issues, like low-res textures and various graphical bugs but, to Konami's credit, they've been slipping in minor patches in response. At least they decided to release it on PC and at a discounted price. I got it for $23.99 on Steam (full price is $30).
148  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Orbis. aka PlayStation 4? The rumors are put to rest. on: January 10, 2014, 06:37:48 PM
Comparing PS Now to Microsoft's DRM policy doesn't make sense. Like Scraper said, PS Now is an optional game service that you could choose to never use.

I'll only take issue with PS Now if it means getting games like The Last of Us in a streaming format INSTEAD of a digital download format. I want the option to go either way (so I never have to stream my games, which is a joke at this point in time).
149  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Orbis. aka PlayStation 4? The rumors are put to rest. on: January 09, 2014, 08:49:53 PM
I would rather download the games to my hard drive and play them locally so as not to worry about all the headaches I associate with streaming content. I don't want my games to stutter and/or look compressed, I don't want to attempt to play the game and discover the service is down or under maintenance, I don't want my broken ass PS4 to not be able to connect to my wifi and cockblock me from streaming games the way it does Netflix movies, I sure as hell don't want ads during loading scenes or anything of that nature.

I think this a great directional strategy, but rubber to pavement I don't think it's going to be a fun ride for a while. There are reasons that OnLive didn't catch and technical roadblocks were a significant factor. I'm rooting for Sony here, but until the streaming experience can match the local experience to a T, I won't touch it.

I enjoyed ME3 but it was certainly less potent than the first two games. I actually liked the ending(s). My biggest gripe is the way the game drops a heap of missions into your lap, many of which were very vague on where to go and what to do.
152  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Orbis. aka PlayStation 4? The rumors are put to rest. on: January 07, 2014, 04:27:49 PM
I'm gonna try and exchange my system for a new one. The majority of the time I just want to use it for Netflix and I consistently have trouble connecting to the network and/or launching the app. Drives me nut to think I have this $400 machine that can't even play Netflix properly. I got a lemon.

Oh well, at least I got through AC4 on it -mostly- fine (with graphic and audio hiccups sprinkled in).

It's disappointing that the PC version is single-player only. I've been wanting to play co-op with my fiance, but I've not been wanting to pay the extra $50 for another Dual Shock 4 plus the price of the game on PS4. I've already vocalized my distaste for this game, but seeing it receive so many GOTY awards is making me feel remorseful and want to go back and give it a second try. Hopefully one day we'll get a "definitive" version of it on the PS4 so I might have that opportunity (already gave my PS3 away to my brother).

Weren't your complaints graphical or something?

It's easily a game of the generation candidate.

I did have an issue with the framerate in a specific section of the game, but mostly I disliked the combat and most of the gameplay mechanics.

So more or less you disliked just about everything? I'm going to go out on a limb and say that maybe it's not worth trying to get another copy of the game.

No, I enjoyed the narrative, characters, and dialogue, like most of you.

Combat did get repetitive, but it's worth playing through. I'd take one of the other's recommendations and play through on easy.

Good advice. Now to convince my brother to let me borrow the PS3 I gave him  Tongue

That's strange, I had no trouble feeling a connection with the characters without them speaking my language. Between the gibberish language and the gesticulating I knew what they were thinking and feeling. I suppose because I feel that most video games are so horrendously written I was happy to not have to worry about cliche dialogue and voice acting.

159  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Wireless Mouse Lag on: December 29, 2013, 07:28:16 AM
I'm experiencing some serious lag with my Microsoft Wireless Mouse 4000. I know it has to do with interference in the signal rather than a depleted battery because when I move the mouse only a matter of inches from my normal sitting position there's no lag. There's ONLY lag when the mouse is in a specific location, but I can't move because I'm dead centered with the TV and have no room to move forward or backward.

I've done a little bit of research and found that it could be a variety of causes - router channel (changed it, made no difference), TV signal, etc.

Any suggestions?
160  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons on: December 29, 2013, 07:07:00 AM
I searched and didn't find a thread for this already, so apologies if this is a duplicate since it's hard to believe we don't already have one already. This game is phenomenal, the way you control two characters at once is unlike anything I've experienced before and the graphics and imagery are incredible. I'm reminded a lot of ICO because of the gentle fashion in which you move about the world. It's a bit too slow paced for me, so if the game goes longer than 4-5 hours I'll probably grow bored. A few hours in though and I'm totally engrossed in it.

Something really cool that I discovered too - The language of the characters is gibberish, but there were multiple times when I could have sworn I was hearing Arabic (I speak it a little). I looked into it online and sure enough, one of the main designers is Arab and built Arabic into the gibberish. Here's an excerpt from an interview with the designer:

Actually, the language is inspired from my own language. I am originally from Lebanon, so I took my Arabic language just to get a base. Creating a gibberish language from the ground up is very hard. When you take a language that is there and you have all the accents – it feels right. I told the actors, “This is what you are saying,” and I wrote to them this and that and it sounds like a language. It wasn’t totally made up. It was made up in many senses, but it is also very inspired by my own language.

Pretty neat smile
