1  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Been away from pc gaming - laptop game performance question on: April 14, 2013, 02:38:52 PM
I have came back to PC gaming after more than 10 years away. I got sick of my quest to have the best hardware and console gaming just kept getting better. Anyway, I jumped back in to play some of the more interesting pc games I have seen. I decided to just go with what I considered a mid-range laptop that should be fine for most stuff. I got a MSI quadcore with a 2gig 660 Geforce.
A lot has changed since I left. I see the default resolution now seems to be 1920x1080. I am curious if most games will play fine for me in that resolution or is is still a game of having to drop resolution down to play better games at acceptable framerates. I have seen recent benchmarks here and there but do not know what high and ultra and all those terms mean anymore.
I will say that the big cross platform games ie Bioshock, Tomb Raider etc that I will continue to play those on the consoles as I still prefer a comfy couch and big tv. For all other stuff, I am just curious if I should be fine or if I will still be playing with graphic card settings.

3  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Steam - Newbie question on: April 08, 2013, 06:32:49 PM
So I quit pc gaming long ago as I got into console gaming and got sick of the constant pc upgrades. As I started checking our steam the last few months and seeing some of the cool interesting games and indie games out there, I decided to pick up a decent windows based gaming laptop. My question is about how steam works. I see how Steam has daily deals and I will not have my new laptop for a week or so. Can I sign up for a steam account on my mac just to purchase games and then later sign in to steam on my new laptop and set them up / download them to that machine. Do the games stream or download? I am assuming it is kinda like the app store where I can do something like that. I would like to get the Grimrock game on sale today.
4  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Missed the party on the Killzone series - Question on part 2 on: November 15, 2011, 08:50:20 PM
So in between all the great new releases coming out this month, I am trying to get through a backlog and I threw in Killzone 2 and have played it quite a bit. My first thought is it seems to be the best shooter I have played where I cannot hit anything for the life of me. I just finished Resistance 3 and with that and any other shooter, i don't give much thought to my aim. With KZ2, it seems like I have noticed instance after instance where I am right next to someone and through the chaos, I miss them completely quite a bit. I cannot tell what it is but maybe the aiming is too touchy. Am I imagining things or was there something talked about with aim on this. I wonder if KZ3 is more of the same?
5  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Gaming Headphones on: November 05, 2010, 07:57:27 PM
Maybe someone here can help. I just bought the  X-31's and am a bit confused on how to set them up. WhileI can hook the RCA cables up to say my DVD player and the xbox360 and it works great, I was under the impression from some reviews, that I could connect it to the TV and everything would get transferred over to the headphones (dvd,tv,xbox,ps3) and I wouldn't have to switch the cables. I can't find a way to do that though. My setup is just a 55" hitachi tv with hdmi to my cable and dvd and component to my xbox and ps3. The back of my tv has the two hdmi, two component inputs and two composite inputs. I also have a digital audio out and some outputs that say 'Audio to hi-fi' but those didn't do anything for me as the docs from the tv say something about those being for recording. So for now it seems I have to switch the headphone jacks around to the various inputs to work with those but I have no way to use them with just tv audio.
6  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Will Guitar Hero on Tour work with Rock Band 1 equipment? on: October 22, 2008, 08:34:39 PM
I'm relatively new to GH and RB. I would like to get GHOT for some of the songs but don't want to shell out for another package of equipment to take up space. I have read that RB2 and GTOT are compatible but I just bought the RB2 game only and stuck with the RB1 equipment. I couldn't find a concrete answer out there.
7  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Question about playing GH Rocks the 80's on PS3 on: August 13, 2008, 06:11:55 PM
Ok. I have searched quite a bit and couldn't find a definite answer. I am new to GH3 on ps3 and would like to get the GH 80's ps2 game. Can I play the game in any way on my ps3 by getting a ps2/ps3 converter and a ps2 guitar? If so which of each do you recommend?

Thanks.

9  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Are lockups on the PSP common? on: October 14, 2007, 09:22:53 PM
I got a PSP slim recently and picked up Lego Star Wars 2. I have had the system lock up twice in the game with the latest being on the last level in Return of the Jedi when I destroy the core of the Death Star. I'm just curious if this is common with the PSP hardware in general.
10  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What is the deal with downloadable PSP sites?? on: September 26, 2007, 09:44:07 PM
I just picked up a PSP slim with a few games and was browsing through some review sites to find some reviews on older games and I ran into some professional looking site claiming to download everything you want for a small one time membership fee. The page also mentioned all firmware versions are fine. I then started searching on downloadable games and ran into more and more of these sites.
I don't know much at all about the PSP so I figured I'd post here to see what the deal is. I have read about homebrew and needing certain hacked firmware versions for it but that doesn't interest me at all to play around with that.
If these sites are scams, they are pretty convincing.
11  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Hmm...should I keep my 360?? on: September 24, 2007, 03:47:41 AM
Okay. Here's the deal. I have all the major consoles and I find myself not playing games as much as I used to. I am keeping my Wii and PS3 for sure but I keep wondering about my 360. It seems that all the third party upcoming games are marked for both the PS3 and the 360. The only games that I can think of coming for the 360 that I would play if I could would be Ninja Gaiden 2 and GOW 2. I could imagine versions of those games showing up on PS3 though. Can anyone convince me to keep it?
12  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: i want this controller on: May 07, 2007, 09:01:13 PM
I would think the quality of this controller would depend on the "model" and version you were using........

Come to think of it, I think I would like the TV remote version of that also.
13  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Do I need to do anything to play PS2 games on the PS3... on: April 26, 2007, 02:10:07 PM
I remember that you have to go in to the ps3 menu and "create" an internal ps2 memory card to be able to save ps2 games properly. I don't remember exactly what the process was but it was described in the manual.

15  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is there a right way to play Gamecube games on thw Wii? on: January 14, 2007, 01:53:51 AM
I have noticed so far that the few times that I played a Gamecube game in the Wii and finished playing the game, that the Wiimote doesn't seem to be able to be used - like it is out of sync. If I hit any buttons on it, I get the four flashing lights. I have to power the console off and power it back on with the wiimote(it works then) to get back to the wii menu. What's the deal?
16  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: kingdom hearts 1 on: January 05, 2007, 05:20:17 PM
I think my levels were in the 40's too but I remember getting through the bosses rather quickly and not having much of a problem.......but I do know I consulted a bunch of faq's during the game on various things so I probably read up on the best way to beat the bosses. I'll just pretend it was legendary skill instead of reading up on the best strategies  icon_biggrin

18  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Couldn't pass up a PS3 deal.... on: December 27, 2006, 04:48:54 AM
So my plan was to wait a few months and pick up a 20 gig PS3 when I stumble upon one in a store. I was in no big rush as Resistance was the only game that interested me at this point. I was curious about what they are going for on ebay so I sorted through the buy-it-nows and I stumbled upon one for $499 with free shipping. I'm saving money right there so I snapped it up. The strange thing is the seller just bought a ps3 for over $600 on 12-24. It's a trustworthy seller based on his numbers so the only thing I can figure is that he has to sell it in a hurry for some reason. I guess I was looking at the right time as the next cheapest ones for the 20 gig models were for $580 plus shipping.
19  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Question about audio setup for consoles on: December 26, 2006, 09:26:26 PM
Kevin,

Thanks for the info. I did look up the specs of the LG unit and the receiver only has one optical audio input. The receiver has a built in upconverting dvd player so i wouldn't need my external one anymore. That would leave me with needing to hook up the ps2,wii,360 and the cable box. The Psyclone selector does 4 so that should work. I could run optical out from the Psyclone to the receiver. The only confusing part would then be the cable box. Would I run the component video straight to the tv as it is now and then run optical audio to the selector box?
20  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Question about audio setup for consoles on: December 26, 2006, 08:43:30 PM
What's the normal connection from hd cable box for audio? Does that need an optical connection on the receiver as well? I just wonder if the receiver could support everything. My setup currently is the 3 system, the tv, the hd cable box and a dvd player. I do know the LG I looked at doesn't have any component inputs.
21  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Question about audio setup for consoles on: December 26, 2006, 08:12:20 PM
I currently have a 360,Wii and PS2 connected via component cable selector box to my hdtv. I have never had a surround sound system hooked up and never thought much about audio connections. I have been debating picking up one of the high rated LG all in one systems from CC. I'm not sure how I would hook the audio portion up for all the systems if I added a receiver into the picture like that. I'm thinking I might need something like the Psyclone souce selector that has optical audio for each port. I would assume that the audio out would go from the selector to the receiver and then I just use the selector to switch between the systems?
22  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The 360 Killed the previous Generation on: September 11, 2006, 01:28:58 PM
Interesting. I bought a new 55" HD tv right before the 360 and I think the PS2 games look better than ever on it. I play more PS2 games than 360 but that is just due to the quantity of games in the genres that I like.
23  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Random battles - what do you think? on: August 28, 2006, 02:01:36 PM
So I started up Shadow Hearts Convenant yesterday and figured I should like it fine with everything I heard.....but after a few hours I stopped as I can't deal with random battles anymore. I'm not a rpg fanatic but I like to play them around the action titles. I didn't have any problems with random battles back in the day but now suddenly can't stand them. It's almost like they are "interfering" with the game flow. I guess after playing games like KH, it's hard to not see my enemies at all. It's a shame too since I bought a used DQ8 recently.
I'm curious how you guys view random battles.
24  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP Firmware question on: August 23, 2006, 01:30:42 PM
I recently picked up a PSP package from Ebay for my son's birthday (can't go wrong with a present you can play yourself too....). It came with 2.71 firmware and I saw that 2.80 was out so I downloaded it and followed the directions and somehow bricked the psp even though the process seemed to go through right. Luckily the guy I bought it from was able to return it to EB and just sent me a replacement. Since that process now scares me, my question is if the upgrade is needed at all. I saw the listing of what was new to 2.80 but it didn't mean anything to me. Do you guys upgrade with every release?
25  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Knights of the Old Republic - Questions on 360 on: July 19, 2006, 10:22:53 PM
I figured it was time to catch up on some games I missed so I loaded this up on the 360. Has anyone played through the whole thing on a 360? It seems okay so far...a bit choppy so far in the first few melee fights I got into.
The other thing I noticed is that this is the first game I have played in a long time that doesn't make use of the whole screen of my widescreen hdtv. It cuts off the sides like regular cable channels and the cut scenes are in a small rectangle about half the size of my screen. My tv info button does list it as 720p. I do not see any in game option to change anything in regards to that. Anybody else encounter this?
26  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Red lights on 360 - Isolated incident or impending doom?? on: June 21, 2006, 02:46:45 PM
Just curious if any of you guys got any red light issues on your 360 that seemed to be isolated or if I am on the road to MS service soon. (I do have the extended warranty)
I had a few lockup issues when I first got my 360 with Burnout (no red lights) and I found info that recommended plugging your 360 into a good power source. I have had mine plugged into a UPS since then. It's on an open air shelf under my tv so I don't think overheating is involved. It's been fine with no issues until yesterday.
I was near the end of Condemned and the system shut itself off and I had three red lights. The UPS also beeped for a split sec like there was a power issue. It is supposed to have voltage regulation so who knows what happened.
It took a minute to get it restarted, but it was fine for the rest of the night. I was just curious if it may have been a power issue or just an isolated glitch...or if it is a sign of things to come.
27  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / FS: MegaMan Powered Up (PSP) w/32meg memory duo on: June 14, 2006, 05:26:00 PM
Actually, the reason I am selling it is I got rid of my PSP. I just didn't play it anymore.
I didn't link to Ebay. I didn't think I was promoting the site. I just mentioned I put it up for sale and if anyone was interested, I would sell to them (directly).

30  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS2 and 16:9 on: April 24, 2006, 12:00:59 AM
Interesting..until I saw your post I had not given any thought to playing PS2 games on my newer hdtv. I manually choose progressive mode if that is an option but I have never had to manually choose 16x9 for any of them. They all have used the entire screen and I have not noticed any stretching.
That is rather odd. The majority of my non-hd cable channels obviously cut off the sides. I have the option to expand the view or even upconvert to 1080i but with the PS2 games, I have not had to do anything.

Actually, maybe I did go into the PS2 main options and set that there....can't remember now.

You can get decent component switch boxes for $20-30. I picked one up from Target in that range and it works great for me. It's got 4 component ins and the 1 out to TV.
32  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Need Oblivion start up advice on: April 11, 2006, 06:38:36 PM
I will be starting Oblivion very soon. I need to finish up Kingdom Hearts and also get all the way through Jewel Quest with my gf to make her happy.

With all the threads I've seen, I don't want to start Oblivion on the wrong foot. What is the deal I have heard about leveling up wrong. I have heard different viewpoints about picking the skills you want as minor skills or you will just screw yourself with higher level enemies. The flip side I hear is to knock the difficulty slider down a bit and just play normal.

What's the recommended advice for the beginning of the game?

34  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Should I continue on with X-men Legends? on: April 05, 2006, 03:37:54 PM
From reading some of the other posts, I am like others here where I will just pick up games at good prices and let them sit a long time before I play them. I picked this up quite some time ago and figured I would enjoy it fine.
Well, I started playing yesterday and felt quite underwhelmed. I actually enjoyed playing the first level more with just one character (wolverine) than I did on the second mission with four characters. It seems that the game is just running around and doing the same two/three combos and trying to determine what your other three "helpers" are doing elsewhere.
I also got the characters killed pretty quickly repeatedly without finding too many health powerups. I didn't read too much on leveling up or using any strategy right from the beginning but I am already leaning on moving on to the next potential classic PS2 oldie that I have designated, Kingdom Hearts.
Any reason to go on with the game?
35  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Question for anyone getting disk errors/freezes on the 360 on: March 30, 2006, 05:12:24 PM
I posted about this in one of the other threads but I don't think too many people saw it. I am curious about the dirty disk/unreadable disk or even the freezes. If you are getting any of these errors, how is your 360 set up in regards to power? My unit was fine until I started playing Burnout and I had three dirty disk errors in a short span last weekend. I changed my setup from a simple powerstrip to a UPS with automatic voltage regulation and have not had any errors since. Granted I haven't played Burnout in long multi hour sessions but I wonder if I am on to something or have just been lucky. I made the switch after seeing a long post about power issue and voltage irregularities causing 360 problems on the xbox.com forums.
In my case, I also had a portable heater plugged into the same strip and this overloaded my ups by itself. I have moved that out so I am not sure if that played a part either.
36  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XBox 360 problems on: March 28, 2006, 03:03:29 PM
As a follow up, I moved out everything from the powerstrip I was using (360 included) and setup a UPS for everything to go into. The UPS does support automatic voltage regulation. I played Burnout for a few hours last night and had a small session with PDZ that I got from Gamefly - no disk errors since the change. Granted it's a small test window so far but it's started out well.
I also realized that a small portable heater we had plugged into the strip overloaded the ups by itself when turned it on. I moved that across the room to an outleft by itself. Not sure if that had anything to do with power problems.
Well it shouldn't take too long to know if this helped or if the errors will continue and I'll need to contact MS.
37  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XBox 360 problems on: March 27, 2006, 08:05:44 PM
Lee,

You posted in my thread as I had the same kind of errors with Burnout. I've found a few things to try:

1. It was suggested to plug the power supply directly into the wall or better yet, a ups with automatic voltage regulation. I have mine into a basic power strip and I will try this tonight.

2. I've also seen something to the effect of shut down the console, remove the hd, restart it and go through initial setup again, shut it down again and restart after hooking the hd back up.

I was thinking of starting with just plugging into a good ups and starting the system up with holding A to clear the cache. I'll see where it gets me.
38  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / How normal are the 360 unreadable disk errors? on: March 26, 2006, 08:52:12 AM
I had one earlier today after about 2 hours of Burnout and then another a little bit ago after an hour of Burnout. I'm not playing any other retail games to test out anything else at this point but the Burnout DVD looks fine. I got my 360 in February so it's not one of the original "buggy" units. I also bought the extended warranty so i'm not worried about anything with that. I'm just wondering if these types of errors are being experienced by a good number of you or if it's a sign that I will be shipping mine in to MS soon.
Also on that topic, I assume if you send one in for repair, that you can just login and retrieve your profile on the new unit? You don't lose anything there correct?
39  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The art of playing multiple games at once on: March 24, 2006, 04:34:10 AM
I don't think I have mastered this art at all. I see some of your sigs and it seems like you are playing 20 games at once. Is there a normal process for this? Do you switch games every day?
With some games I can accomplish this. Right now I am playing POP:TTT on PS2 and Jewel Quest/Burnout on 360. These types of games are easy to go back to wherever and get back in. I just picked up Oblivion (Circuit City price matched CompUSA's $44 even though they were out of stock..woohoo) and I'm a bit worried to bring it in the rotation. Any time I try this with a longer more involved game, I get lost when taking an extended break for another game.
The woes of getting older and having less time to play games...stupid jobs..

I just posted right before about Astropop. I've read rumors of next wednesday for SF2. I will then issue you an official challenge.

Actually I should hold off on all my challenges. SF Alpha 2 for PS1 was my game with all the custom combos and such. I don't know how good I am at the more standard versions anymore.
