Why aren't there female taxi drivers?

I know this is random but the thought just now raced across my brain. Why have I never, ever, in any country (and I've been in a few) nor in any movie, ever seen a female taxi driver?

I've seen a few here in Norway. It's probably a dangerous job for a female though.

Well, the most obvious answer is that many consider them the weaker sex and thus easy prey for assault and robbery.  Clearly they don't know the same women I do.

Also, I've been in cabs in San Francisco, CA and Charleston, SC driven by women.

However, every cab I've been in in France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Isreal, & Egypt were all driven by men.

I've seen quite a few up here in Canada.  Certainly not the majority, but they're common enough.

My only other thought is that in most larger cities, the majority of cab drivers tend to be new immigrants.  I wonder if there might be some cultural factors at play, where the male is expected to work while the female remains at home with the family.  Most of the female cab drivers I've seen are white women in smaller cities where the majority of cab drivers are white as well.

Hmm, yeah, now that you mention it I've only ever seen 1 female cabbie my whole life in Ontario, Canada.
And that was over 15 years ago. Interesting...
