I tried changing the resolution in Thief 3 and it was too high for my LCD monitor. It went out of range and now the screen is black and I can't get in to change it back. I can't change it through 'safe mode reboot' either because the game won't start in safe mode because it needs the sound drivers to start the game, and in safe mode the drivers are off. So now I'm trying to find the ini. file so I can change the res back that way. Does anyone know the name of the ini. file to change the resolution settings in Theif 3? I'm going through them right now and I can't find it.

usually out of scan range means the refresh is too high not the res.

One thing you could try is using RefreshLock to force the refresh to a setting you know your monitor supports.

The refresh rate of my LCD is set at 60. It can't go any lower. And turning it up to 75 up makes no difference. I need to change the resolution of the game down a notch.

Most games don't control the refresh rate, that is controlled by the video driver, the OS, or a utility such as RefreshLock which can override everything.

If Thief 3 has a refresh setting, that would be unusual, (but not unheard of), you could just uninstall the game, reinstall it, and choose the correct refresh. Odds are though, refreshlock will do what you are needing done.

RL will have a list of every possible resolution and color pallette combination, and then you assign a refresh rate for each combination that the game supports (e.g. 1024x768x32bit @ 75 hz) . This will force Thief 3 to use 75 hz at 1024.

Thanks for the link. I've installed the program but I still cannot get the game to run. My LCD TV's current refresh rate is 75. I've tried all the resolutions 'at' and 'above' the rate that the game was previously running on (I had it set and working around 1000x700 and then I turned it up 'ONE" level. Can't remember exactly what it was) and set the refresh in refresh lock to 75. So, this should be telling the game to run at those resolutions at 75. I start the game, I still get my red 'signal' flash on the TV and the blank screen, indicating the game is still out of range. I don't know what to do. I had the same problem with splinter cell, but I was able to find the ini. file and change the resoultion back down that way. I would like to find the ini file that allows me to do that in 'thief 3' but so far I can't track it down. If anyone has an idea what this file is called, please let me know. I have gone very carefully through about 6 ini files in the game and I still can't find where the resolution change is stored.

Resolution too high and freezes fix:

If your Resolution is set too high in the game, and you can't change it back because the game got EXTREMELY fuzzy then follow these directions:

You can change it by first finding this folder, should be here - C:\Documents and Settings\PC\My Documents\Thief - Deadly Shadows\SaveGames\User Options -, open the options file (should be the only file you see) like the 12th line down will be "RESOLUTION=4" change it to "RESOLUTION=2" Save the file and start up your game. Should be all good.

Thank for that tip! I finally found the folder and made the change. It works!
