The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth launches for Magic: The Gathering players on June 23

Earlier this month I got a sneak peek at Wizards of the Coast latest Magic: The Gathering set Magic: The Gathering: The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth which releases on June 23rd. In typical Magic: The Gathering fashion a week before the release local game stores will hold a prerelease event for the set starting on June 16 to June 22, 2023. This will also coincide with the digital release of Magic: The Gathering: The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth on Magic: The Gathering Arena.

Today, Wizards of the Coast officially debuted the upcoming Magic: The Gathering set, The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, revealing new mechanics and a closer look at some of the cards that players will discover, once the set launches on June 23.

It’s time to embark on a different sort of journey as Magic presents characters, locations, and epic moments from the epic fantasy novels of J.R.R. Tolkien. The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth is packed with exciting new cards and a few marquee keywords and mechanics to review.

With a new set comes a lot of different items such as new boosters, new bundles, new and intriguing art/specialized art for the set, and even a Secret Lair drop.

Like most sets Wizards of the Coast are releasing set boosters, draft boosters, jumpstart boosters and collector boosters. Accompanying these boosters is a bundle, starter kit which contains two 60 card decks, and four new commander decks. One of the cooler art styles included within the set are the ‘showcase ring’ art. These are special art variants of about 30 cards in the set that have the Elvish writing from The One Ring around the image of the card.

Within the entire set there are a few different things going on and a direction that the creators over at Wizards of the Coast wanted players to experience. Some of which is, when getting into the set and viewing it, you are able to experience the fellowship going on their epic journey to destroy The One Ring and save Middle Earth. Also included are fantastic and beautiful cards that make up scenes when put together. This is in part thanks to single artists creating many different cards at once which show off epic scenes from the Lord of the Rings. There are nine different scenes included in the set for collectors of all types to collect.

Something extra for the Magic: The Gathering enthusiast and collectors alike that was also announced was a new Secret Lair drop based on the 1978 Animated Lord of the Rings movie. That is expected to be available for order on Friday June 20th at 9am Pacific Time.

With all that said there are going to be celebration events going on at local game stores where players can get a promotional six sided die among other fun goings on.

The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth will launch on June 23 and is available to preorder now online at Amazon and at your local game store.
