Today during the recently announced Pokémon Direct, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company announced that Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield will be heading to the Nintendo Switch later this year. Set in the brand new Galar region, trainers will be able to explore a world of different environments as they befriend and team up with Pokémon new and old.
Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield will be set in Galar, an expansive region with many environments—idyllic countryside, contemporary cities, thick forests, and craggy, snow-covered mountains. The people and Pokémon live together in this region, and they’ve worked together to develop the industries here.
You’ll visit the various Gyms in the Galar region, aiming for the enviable and admirable title of Champion!
The three starter Pokémon announced are Grookey (grass), Scorbunny (fire), and Sobble (water). While their evolutions and future typing are unannounced at time of writing, we’ll be sure to keep you updated on the wonderful eighth generation of the franchise. In the meantime you can check out our continuing coverage of Pokémon, from Abram’s review of Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu to Kay’s great piece on her experiences with Pokémon Go to even our wishlist of things to add for a Pokémon Switch game.
