Phantom Blade Zero's State of Play digs into combat, side quests, and Donnie Yen's involvement

4 difficulty modes, 30 Weapons, and 25 Phantom Edges

Phantom Blade Zero

S-Game founder Soulframe Liang used the latest PlayStation State of Play to give Phantom Blade Zero its biggest public breakdown yet, walking you through the world, the combat, the difficulty options, and Donnie Yen's role in shaping the game.

The game takes place in the Wulin, a dark wuxia setting full of conflict, hidden agendas, and side stories worth chasing. You step into the boots of the protagonist, Soul, and the studio made a point of noting that side quests aren't just filler. Some open up new story paths and add real weight to the events driving the main plot.

Exploration is also tied to the game's build variety. There are more than 30 main weapons on offer, plus 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges, and both can be upgraded, mixed with accessories, and combined with summons or ranged tools to fit whatever playstyle you want. If a build stops working, weapons can be reforged, materials refunded, and reinvested somewhere else.

The studio also confirmed a spread of difficulty options. Wayfarer is the story-first way in, Hellwalker ramps up the enemy AI for players hunting a stiffer challenge, and Sixty-Six Days is described as the mode not for the faint of heart. Rounding out the reveals was more on Donnie Yen's involvement. Beyond his role as Creative Consultant, Yen also plays the character Mo Yuan through facial and motion capture.
