Last of Us’ Dark Tone Won’t Influence Uncharted 4

Since the reveal that The Last of Us directors Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley have taken over Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, there’s been speculation that Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic game would influence the tone of the next Uncharted.

Speaking with Eurogamer Naughty Dog co-president confirmed that while the studio did learn a lot from a technical angle that could help with the development of Uncharted, none of the darker themes or tone would be bleeding into Nathan Drake’s PlayStation 4 debut.

“Uncharted is a completely different franchise, and appeals to its audience for completely different reasons,” says Wells said. “I don’t think The Last of Us marks a new direction in tone that all of our future games are going to take on. We’d alienate a lot of our Uncharted fans. We want to keep it a light-hearted romp. I think from a technical standpoint we’ve learnt some things from the Last of Us that will feed into Uncharted – in fact it strengthens our desire to keep them distinct.”

Naughty Dog’s community strategist Arne Meyer recently echoed these statements, claiming that The Last of Us: Remastered was a great help to the studio in transitioning between the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End got its proper reveal at Sony’s press conference back in June. Since then, Sony has spoken about the possibility of bringing the first three Uncharted games to PlayStation 4 in a similar manner to The Last of Us: Remastered.
