Assassin’s Creed Syndicate will feature the series’ first transgender character

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate will be the first game in the series to feature a transgender character.

Speaking to Eurogamer, creative director Marc-Alexis Côté said that “inclusiveness” is something that is “super important” for the team working on Syndicate and that they have put a lot of effort in diversity and how the game approaches different subjects.

The character, whose name is Ned Wynert, is one of many NPCs who will give main characters Jacob and Evie Fry missions. According to Côté, Wynert “is an accurate reflection of ‘the Victorian era,'” and he wants players to meet the character to form their own opinions on him.

The disclaimer that comes before every Assassin’s Creed game — “This work of fiction was designed, developed and produced by a multicultural team of various religious faiths and beliefs” — has also been revised to include sexual identity. When players boot up Syndicate, they will be met with a disclaimer reading, “Inspired by historical events and characters, this work of fiction was designed, developed, and produced by a multicultural team of various beliefs, sexual orientations and gender identities.” This revision was proposed by Côté after he felt that the previous was exclusive to some people who may be playing the game.

“It felt like when we first wrote that for AC1 it was something that was very inclusive,” Côté said. “But I’ve had the chance to work with more than 12 different writers on Syndicate. At one point, one approached me and said that we were not embracing diversity fully enough.”

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 23. It was recently announced that all of the other mainline AC games would be coming to Sony’s game streaming service, PlayStation Now.
