I’ve been playing Rainbow Six Siege for nearly ten years now, and something that I learned early on is that sound is one of your greatest assets. Hearing footsteps, discerning down audio from prone audio, and knowing when someone is disabling the diffuser can make all the difference in a match. RIG provides audio solutions at every level, for every gamer. The recently released RIG R5 Spear Pro headset for PlayStation is one of their latest endeavors, boasting exceptional quality for the competitive gamer. I’ve been hard at work putting this headset through its paces in Siege, as well as Battlefield 6, to see how it stacks up.

The R5 Spear Pro is a lightweight wired headset, plugging into your controller with the standard 3.5mm audio jack. This model is licensed by PlayStation, able to be used on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, though with the universal audio jack, it also works on PC, and anything else with the 3.5mm port. Not only are the ear cushions memory foam, but the headband is as well, ensuring comfort over long periods of time. You can also swap out the Mod-Plates on each ear cup. This one has PlayStation Mod-Plates, but there are options for customizing Mod-Plates, as well as potential for collabs in the future. The Mod-Plates are attached via magnets and are very easy to pop off and on again.

This is a mid-level headset that has high-level audio output from the graphene-coated 40mm drivers. Graphene is a super strong and durable material on the diaphragm of the speakers. It can be moved easily due to its flexibility and light weight, reducing distortion in audio. Wherever you are on the listening spectrum, the R5 Spear Pro delivers accurate audio reproduction. For the most part, spatial sound cues such as footsteps, reloading, and shifting positions are clearly defined. Forward audio is also really good; however, rear audio still leaves something to be desired, as it can still be confused with right or left audio due to how sound is distributed from the speakers.

It also depends on the game’s overall sound design. For example, on the map Villa in Rainbow Six Siege, most surfaces are stone and other hard materials that make sounds more echo-y, making it a little harder to tell where the audio is coming from in some areas. While this headset will help you home in on those sounds, it’s also good to remember to always keep your head on a swivel.

Communicating enemy positions and other key information wouldn’t be possible without a good microphone. The R5 Spear Pro comes equipped with a broadcast-grade 6mm microphone with a 50Hz to 15kHz frequency range. You should have no problems making yourself heard loud and clear, whether you’re pushing forward, calling out the objective, or even yapping about how bad your teammates are. When you’re done chatting, you can flip the mic up to mute yourself.

This headset is very comfortable to wear over longer periods of time due to its lightweight design. It’s also very accommodating for wearing glasses, not putting too much pressure on the sides of the head. The materials on R5 Spear Pro may be light, but they’re also durable, so you can trust that your headband won’t snap if it gets a little twisted and the earcups won’t break off any time soon. There’s also an in-line volume slider to adjust in the moment, which is super convenient.

The RIG R5 Spear Pro is already available in Europe, and it will soon become available in the United States, with a retail price of $69.99. Overall, this is a great headset for competitive gamers who need that little extra audio boost, and the holidays are just around the corner, making this the perfect gift.
