Puyo Puyo Tetris was an early release for the Nintendo Switch, and history will repeat itself nearly a decade later with the release of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S on Nintendo Switch 2. At launch, it will be the only puzzle game exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 and this new version has a host of new features and options in addition to the base game’s variety of multiplayer modes and single player adventure mode.
The main features 2S brings to the package are the Double Mode, where you play with Puyos and Tetriminos at the same time, as well as a two-player mode where two players can drop pieces on one board. In addition, we even got to test out the Mouse Mode controls using a Joy Con 2 controller, though that didn’t go well since I only used a left handed Joy Con 2 and I’m right handed.

For those out of the loop on these series - Puyo Puyo involves stacking like-colored bean creatures in a way that causes them to chain together groups of 4 or more Puyos. Puyo Puyo has a pretty high skill ceiling and that can help add to the multiplayer shenanigans, especially since Puyo is only half of this crossover. Tetris - the most iconic puzzle game with its simple row clearing gameplay helped establish the Game Boy in the 1980s - is the other half.
When you bring them together in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S, you get a ton of multiplayer modes. For this preview, we got to test the double mode. Here, two-players work together on a single board, either in multiplayer or with the CPU. I’m pretty decent at Puyo and Tetris, but being stuck with the CPU meant I had a harder time planning ahead since I had no partner to communicate with. This was a cool mode but definitely something I’d rather experience with a group of friends.

Given that we only had a short time to demo the one mode, it’s hard to say anything significant about Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S, but, given the game is on other platforms, I can tell you this is going to be worth it if you’re getting a Nintendo Switch 2 if only for one major addition: GameShare. Before we started playing we got a brief overview of the tweaks made to 2S and were told the game will support up to three other players with just one copy of the game, local and online.
For a puzzle game that caters to players of all skill levels, GameShare is probably the best new addition. Being able to play with friends or family anywhere, anytime, anyway is a great inclusion. Alongside the new doubles mode and the new control options, it’s pretty clear that this will be a game to consider for your Nintendo Switch 2 launch lineup.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S launches the same day as Nintendo Switch 2 along with Sega’s Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut. We covered both Yakuza 0 and Raidou Remastered at the same preview event and we’ll be covering even more from Sega in the coming months so keep it locked to GamingTrend to all that and more!
