It’s not uncommon for movie studios to get rights to a game franchise and claim that a movie set in its world will be coming, but it is more uncommon for these claims to actually lead to a feature film. For the Uncharted series, it appears that the long discussed movie starring Nathan Drake might actually be close to beginning production.
Speaking to Zap2It, director Seth Gordon stated that the plan is for the Uncharted movie to begin filming early next year.
When asked when the Uncharted movie would begin shooting, Gordon responded with the following:
“I think very early next year. That’s the plan.” While months from now, Gordon noted that due to the scope of the film there was quite a bit of pre-production left for the film before shooting starts. “That’s like tomorrow, essentially, because the prep is so complicated for the movie.”
Regarding the casting of Uncharted protagonist Nathan Drake, Gordon stated that he was more interested in finding an actor who could act the part rather than whether or not they are a known name.
“I want it to be a great actor,” Gordon says. “That’s number one, and then if it’s someone who has an actual jaw, that’s even better. The game is so well done that you need it to live up to that. There’s no way we’d do the inverse of that where it’s somebody famous who can’t [act].”
As for where the Uncharted movie takes place in the story, Gordon said it will be respectful of the games, but not really take place in any certain one.
“I love the complexity and frankly the sophistication of the storytelling in the game, and we aspire to that — but don’t want to tell the exact same story, of course — so something that doesn’t break the rules of what it did but expands. Because I feel like the people who play the games and know them well don’t want to just see the same story told. You want extra shades.”
If the Uncharted film will be in production next year, it will likely be released, or at the very least in the marketing stages, by the release of the recently revealed Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Recently, Sony said that the Uncharted series was a “good candidate” for a re-release on the PlayStation 4.
