The Pathless, from Abzu developer Giant Squid, announced for 2019 release

Of the many announcements at tonight’s Game Awards, one of the most eye-catching was The Pathless. While its announcement trailer didn’t tell us much, its soaring score and forest full of neon monstrosities certainly got our attention. Even more excitingly, the game is being made by Giant Squid Studios, the developer of Abzu, a game whose Switch port we recently gushed over.

Developed by the award-winning team behind ABZÛ and published by Annapurna Interactive, The Pathless is a game about an archer and an eagle on a mythic quest in a vast forest. Players take the role of the Hunter, a master of archery who travels to a mystical island to dispel a curse of darkness that grips the world.

Players will explore a beautiful open world packed with secrets and engage in epic battles against giant corrupted spirits that lurk in the woods. The story of companionship and adventure is set to release in 2019.

Annapurna Interactive’s Ashen was also announced at tonight’s awards show.

A committed indoor kid, Bryan moved from Pittsburgh to Los Angeles for a prettier landscape to ignore. They can be lured outside with promises of taco trucks and film festivals, and enjoy trawling through used book stores for works on the occult. Bryan has been gaming since the SNES era and is a sucker for good pixel art.
