Today, Atomic Mass Games revealed more of their upcoming Star Wars Legion product releases at the 2025 GAMA Tradeshow, following their Star Wars Legion Refresh (Legion 2.0) announcement during their 2024 Ministravaganza. At the GAMA seminar, more information was revealed regarding the much-desired Faction Starter Sets. These will replace the current two, two-player starter sets of the Galactic Civil War and Clone Wars eras released by Fantasy Flight Games (FFG). While these starter sets have a great starting point for the minis, dice, and templates, after announcing the new edition, the cards and contents of those starters are unusable. These new starter sets will offer a fantastic entry point for new players looking to start playing Star Wars Legion, or simply start a new faction entirely.

Rebellion and Empire Starter Boxes
Galactic Republic and Separatist Alliance Starter Boxes

Each Faction Starter Box include the following:

  • Enough miniatures to field a 600-point Skirmish Army (1000 points is the standard game size)
  • Unit, Upgrade, Command, and Objective Cards
  • Tokens
  • Dice
  • Measuring Tools

The Faction Starter Sets will be for the Rebellion, Empire, Galactic Republic, and Separatist Alliance. Current MSRP has yet to be stated, but pre-orders begin Summer 2025 with a Fall 2025 release date. With this new Starter Box format, it has been suggested and rumored that it will allow for new faction to easily be added to the game, much like the Shadow Collective Starter Set. This could allow for starter sets of Gungans, Naboo Security, Ewoks, First Order, Resistance, or perhaps High Republic armies to join the game, although there has been no confirmation of this - simply speculation.

In addition to the starter boxes, Star Wars Legion Card Packs are going to be released at or around the same time. There will be multiple varieties of Card Packs, including faction-specific Unit Card Packs and Command Card Packs, and Universal Card Packs. The Unit Card packs, containing all unit and unit-specific upgrades for one faction, and the Command Card Pack, containing all previously released Commander and Operative Unit cards and all generic and character command cards for one faction, are being treated as ‘transitional product.’ Transitional products are “aimed at existing players who are looking to update their collection,” and are designed for players who own the FFG models.

You don’t have to wait until Q3 to start playing, however. Atomic Mass Games has the entire new edition rules, cards, and accessories available to download for free on their site. That’s pretty amazing. Recently, Gaming Trend had an interview with Will Shick, Director of Product Development, who touched upon the rationale behind this generosity.

But wait… there’s more!

In addition to the Starter Boxes and Card Packs, they showed off a few of the upcoming expansion packs scheduled to be released this year, including the following:

  • Ahsoka Tano (Padawan and Commander versions) for Galactic Republic
  • Imperial High Command, including Grand Admiral Thrawn, Director Krennic (new sculpt), Grand Moff Tarkin, and General Tagge (you know, the guy with the sweet sideburns and bowl cut from A New Hope?)
  • Hard-plastic remakes of previous soft-plastic units, including from the very first FFG releases.
  • Luke and Han Solo on Tauntauns, which introduces a new ‘vehicle mount’ game mechanic (details TBD).
  • General Grievous on Wheel Bike (with vehicle mount mechanic)
  • Imperial Probe Droids
