Today during a Nintendo Direct, Square Enix unvieled Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United. This is a fully 3D remake of the 1995 game with HD visuals, fully voiced cutscenes, combat and other mechanical overhauls, and more new features.
Once every 300 years, the Rise of Morastrum eclipses the sun and destroys all newborn life, sparing only a single survivor known as the Child of Destiny. Six hundred years ago, that child became the Archfiend who brought ruin, while three hundred years ago another became the Matriarch who drove back the darkness. Now, over a decade after the latest Rise, the Archfiend's Four Sinistrals have returned to the world, prying open the Abyss Gates that separate the mortal realm from the Abyss.
Players will take control of one of eight protagonists, Mikhail, Monika, Katarina, Khalid, Julian, Thomas, Sarah or Ellen, and begin the search for the Child of Destiny from their own unique perspective. Additionally, you can meet and recruit over 20 other characters along the way, each with individual stats and abilities. Every character's seven base attributes can also be shaped by a Nonastrum, a star of fate the player assigns that influences their affinity with techs and spells.
In true SaGa series fashion, a Freeform Scenario System lets player choices shape the characters they meet, the events that unfold and alter the course of the story. In battle, characters can glimmer new techniques or learn to evade enemy attacks mid-encounter, while formations and the powerful United Attack add further layers of strategy to encounters. War Mode and the Business minigame also return, letting players command armies or grow a trading empire alongside the main story.
Playable characters include:
Julian Noh, an earnest young man from Sinon who got his strong sense of justice from his late father. He resents Morastrum, cursing the star of fate he was chosen by.
Ellen Carson, a young woman also from Sinon and elder sister to Sarah. Determination and stubbornness pushes her forward along with the desire to protect her family.
Sarah Carson is also from Sinon and the younger sister of Ellen. She hopes to one day escape her protective sister's shadow and stand on her own two feet.
Thomas Bent, of Messana's House Bent, possesses a sharp whit and strategic brilliance as he stands against the Abyss.
Khalid, known as "the Tornado", is a skilled and respected mercenary. His curved sword is a reminder of his lost homeland.
Mikhail Ausbach von Loanne sits on the throne of the marquistate of Loanne, and is Monika's elder brother. Even as a noble, he never hesitates to take to the front lines to protect his country.
Monika Ausbach is Mikhail's younger sister and the princess of Loanne. Gentle, kind, and softspoken, her quiet strength is beloved by her people.
Finally, Katarina Lauran is a noble swordswoman and retainer to House Loanne. She wields her sword in service of her nation and her beloved lord.
More characters will join your chosen protagonist on their journey, like Count Leonid, Peony, and Robin the Remarkable, as you decide where to go and what to do in the freeform Scenario System.
