Over the past several hours, an image of what is allegedly the next Assassin’s Creed game has been making the rounds on the web, and according to Eurogamer, it’s the real deal.
The image was leaked on the Assassin’s Creed subreddit by user “shoutouttoashraf,” though judging by the post’s exasperated headline, it leaked prior to this post. The image—which appears to be an offscreen snapshot of the game running—shows a person on a sailboat clad in white linen, a shield, and a quiver of arrows. It also shows a HUD objective marker and a mission description, which reads “Assassinate the Crocodile” and “Follow Shadya to Khenut’s villa.”
Eurogamer’s report also confirmed an earlier report from WWG that the game will be called Assassin’s Creed: Origins and is due out this year for PS4, Xbox One and PC. As the name suggests, the game will be a prequel to the AC series (though considering the franchise’s convoluted time-bending chronology, it isn’t quite clear what this means). Last year, Kotaku reported that the next Assassin’s Creed game would not be released that year—breaking the series’ annualized release cycle—and that the game would be set in Egypt. Based on the image’s referrence to “Khenut’s villa,” it would appear Assassin’s Creed: Origins will indeed bring us to the lands of the first civilizations (Khenut was the wife of King Unas and Queen of Egypt during the time of the Fifth dynasty of Egypt).
With E3 just around the corner, we will no doubt hear much more about the return of the Assassin’s Creed series during Ubisoft’s press conference. We might also hear more about this Far Cry western everyone keeps talking about.
