Next Warhammer Game to be made by creators of Total War series

The Warhammer universe has always gotten a bad break when it comes to video games. While its offspring, Warhammer 40,000, has gotten great titles out of Relic Entertainment, I can’t think of a really good game set in Warhammer’s dark fantasy world. But I think that might be about to change.

Games Workshop, who own the Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 universes, has announced a partnership with SEGA of America and the Creative Assembly—developers of the Total War series. Just to be clear: this does not affect the Warhammer 40,000 license, which is owned by THQ, but Wahammer is a pretty cool universe in it’s own right, and it touches a lot of the same themes.

“With this year being our 25th anniversary”, said Tim Heaton, Studio Director at Creative Assembly, “it seems fitting for us to embark on such a dream project with such a well-established partner. The incredibly rich and detailed Warhammer world is something we grew up with, and has left an indelible imprint on us as both designers and gamers.”

“We’ll be doing the Warhammer universe justice in a way that has never been attempted before. We’re bringing those 25 years of experience and expertise in extremely high-scoring games to bear, delivering a Warhammer experience that videogamers will absolutely love.”

I don’t want to get too carried away here, as the press release—which you’ll find below—indicates that the next Warhammer game won’t be made by the Total War team, but it’s still hard not to get excited. You can believe we’ll be keeping a close eye on this one, so stay tuned.
