I’ve been looking forward to the new Tomb Raider game because it looks to humanize it’s protagonist, Lara Croft. In previous games the famed archaeologist has tended toward a sort of ultra-sexed femme fatale, but it’s looking like the newest incarnation will be a bit more human. The set of screenshots released today show a Lara Croft I hadn’t seen before. She looks scared, even vulnerable, which is a far cry from the confident, wise-cracking Lara Croft I knew.
The idea of a humanized Lara Croft opens up some great storytelling options where a scared girl has to grow into a hardened survivor, though it’s a real shame that the devs are going to rely on the tired cliché of sexual assault to get that story going. Whether the game lives up to those possibilities remains to be seen, but in the mean time be sure to check out the screenshots below.
