Microsoft has acquired the education-oriented version of Minecraft called MinecraftEdu, and will be using it to release a subscription-based version of the game called Minecraft: Education Edition.
Minecraft: Education Edition will launch as a free trial over the summer and will be available through a subscription after the trial period concludes. Subscriptions for Education Edition will cost $5 a year per account and previous users of MinecraftEdu will be able to use Education Edition for free for the first year.
MinecraftEdu has been used in schools to teach students in several different subjects, including art, design, and programming.
