MagicCon Amsterdam showed off exciting previews for Bloomburrow and Duskmourn: House of Horror. In addition to that Wizards of the Coast also showed off a brand new set called Magic: The Gathering Foundations. Let’s dive right in and see what’s in store for Magic: The Gathering!
Magic: The Gathering Foundations
Wizards of the Coast is launching a new standard legal set called Magic: The Gathering Foundations. Unlike other expansion sets that rotate out of Standard after three years, Foundations will be Standard legal until at least 2029. Foundations feels like Wizards iterating on the concept of the “Core Set.” In the past, Core Sets were useful entry points for new players, but their appeal fell off as players moved past the cards offered in them. With Foundations, Wizards is hoping to create a set that appeals to newbies and veterans alike. This also gives Wizards another way to control what cards make it into Standard. Magic: The Gathering Foundations will release November 15th, 2024.
Duskmourn: House of Horror
A love letter to 80s horror, Duskmourn: House of Horror arrives September 27th, 2024. The entire plane is inside the house with no exterior. As a fan of horror I’m particularly excited to see another horror inspired set. Archenemy returns to the Commander format with Duskmourn with scheme cards added into the Duskmourn Commander decks. Archenemy is a 3vs1 multiplayer format that feels perfect for a horror set. A bunch of cards for Duskmourn were shown off at MagicCon Amsterdam and the set is filled with powerful effects:
Bloomburrow
Arriving August 2nd, 2024 Bloomburrow features tiny animals banding together to protect their homes. MagicCon Amsterdam previewed cards to wet the appetite of players waiting for Bloomburrow. Bloomburrow’s draft environment will center around the 10 major creature types and the village cycle of cards shows which creature types go with each color. I almost wish Bloomburrow was after Duskmourn as I think we’re going to need a happier tone after Duskmourn, but I’m particularly interested in how Bloomburrow’s color pairing will work.
The rest of the year for Magic: The Gathering is full of exciting new releases with drastically different tones. I look forward to seeing how these sets shake out as they release.
