If I tell you guys a secret, do you promise not to laugh or shun me forever? Okay, but remember that you promised. Here goes: Final Fantasy X is my favorite Final Fantasy game. I know, I know! But hear me out on this one: it was the first game I ever bought with my own money. I humped carts around a Target parking lot for hours to get this game and I still remember the feeling I had walking out of Best Buy (give me a break, I was 16 and didn’t know better) after I’d gotten it.
Sure it has its flaws but there’s a lot to like about it, too. It was a stunningly beautiful game back in 2001, and the voice acting wasn’t terrible if you could ignore Tidus. And remember that beneath the melodrama and creepy laughing scene was a pretty affecting love story and pretty interesting subtext on the dangers of awarding too much power to religious bodies. And let’s not forget the soundtrack. I defy you to listen to “In Zanarkand” without a tear in your eye.
Well, if you, like me, have a fond spot in your heart for Yuna, Wakka, Lulu and company, you’re probably as excited as I am for the HD re-release of both Final Fantasy X and its sequel Final Fantasy X-2. X was one of the prettiest things I’d ever seen when it first came out, and the updated visuals look to really sharpen everything up. I might have to revisit Spira to see if the Yuna’s Pilgrimage holds up to a second running. In the mean time, you can find some screenshots and videos below to tide you over.
