Just a year and a half after the release of Pyre, Supergiant Games’ next game is already out — with some caveats. Announced at during the Game Awards, Hades is available now in Early Access on the Epic Games Store.
Hades is a rogue-like dungeon crawler where you defy the god of death as you hack and slash your way out of the Underworld of Greek myth. It’s never the same experience twice: Each time you play, you’ll combine the divine might of various Olympian gods with your own, brave nefarious new challenges, and unravel more of the story featuring our award-winning art, audio, and narrative.
From the trailer, Hades looks to be a faster-paced game than the studio’s previous releases, without losing any of its signature style. Supergiant has promised regular updates to the game in Early Access, adding new weapons and powers while building on the story. Given that Supergiant’s other games are heavily focused on story, the studio also has a unique take on how to incorporate Hades’ narrative into a frequently changing Early Access title, according to the game’s FAQ.
The opportunity to deliver story in a serial fashion during Early Access is one of the many reasons we were excited to go this route with Hades. Think of our Early Access launch as the pilot episode of a new series. You can look forward to meeting close to 20 different fully voiced characters, and experiencing the setup for the story, along with hours of unique events and interactions.
There’s no word on how long the game is expected to stay in Early Access, but it should be available on “a variety of platforms” upon its official release.

They can be lured outside with promises of taco trucks and film festivals, and enjoy trawling through used book stores for works on the occult.
