Friday Tabletop Kickstarter Update – Some big boxes and some small boxes

Welcome, Welcome to another Kickstarter Update where we strive to bring you the most interesting up-and-coming Kickstarter projects. Here is a handy introduction if you would like to know more about what is going on. Here are this weeks picks presented in no particular order.

Remember that I am in no way endorsing these games, I have not played them, I have not talked to the publishers. Back at your own risk.

Tiny Epic Defenders
Apparent Weight: Light
Genre: Cooperative, Card Driven

After seeing great success with Tiny Epic Kingdoms, designer Scott Almes and publisher Gamelyn Games are back on KS looking to fund their next game Tiny Epic Defenders. Set in the same world as their previous game, Defenders utilizes an interesting card driven turn mechanic that makes it more difficult to predict when players will get to take actions. If you want to see more, including a pile of reviews and a bunch of art, go check out their project page.

Antidote
Apparent Weight: Medium-Light
Genre: Social Deduction, Semi-cooperative

After grabbing my attention with an impressive and clean graphic design, Antidote jumped out as an interesting variation to the social deductions games that have become a staple. Instead of being a team game, Antidote features shifting alliances and cooperation where everyone has the same goal, but not everyone can win. It may only have a few cards, but the pledge levels are pretty low to begin with.

Start Player Express
Apparent Weight: NA
Genre: Pre-gaming all of your games

The name says it all. Start Player Express is not really a game so much as it is an accessory to just about every other game. This project is developing a set of dice that solves the problem of determining starting player. Personally this has never been a ‘problem’ per se, but I like their fix for it.

Gothic Doctor
Apparent Weight: Light
Genre: Set Collection, Hand management

Our very own Rob Gardiner posted about this recently, you can see what he said about it here. Praised for its theme, Gothic Doctor smashed Victorian Horror with an emergency room. Players compete to cure patients such as a werewolf with a shave, some silver and a tooth extraction. As Rob pointed out, Gothic Doctor will possibly resonate with doctors and Victorian horror enthusiasts.

Through the Ages
Apparent Weight: Medium Heavy
Genre: Civilization building, Action point selection

Any hobby gamer worth their salt has at least heard of Through the Ages. If you meander over to BoardGameGeek you will find that Through the Ages is one of the highest ranked games of all time. However, try to find the game for a reasonable price and you will end up redefining ‘reasonable price.’ Eagle Games is bringing the game back for another print run, funded through their Kickstarter. Get it while you can.

Scrapyard Empire
Apparent Weight: Medium
Genre: Set collection, Player Powers

Many people think that the Steampunk theme is just about as saturated as the Zombie theme for Kickstarter games; however with Scrapyard Empire, it looks like there is actually a solid game behind the theme. Want to build a walking house, or a time machine? This Victorian Era Junkyard Wars pits competitors in a race to build the most fantastical inventions in order to claim a dead man’s fortune.

Oh… and then there is Potato Salad.

If you have KS topics that interest you, let me know @Scooter_TTTD

From Trading in the Mediterranean to FPS, I love games. While I grew up in a house without consoles, PC gaming and board gaming were a large part of my formative years, and continue to influence my life. In this golden age of board gaming, I have jumped in headfirst in to anything table top. As a ludilogical student, I love thinking about how games work, their mechanics, their elegance and most importantly, enjoying how fun they are.

Favorite Board Game (at the moment): Twilight Struggle
Favorite PC Game (base solely on play time): Tie between WoW and DII
