Dungeons & Dragons brings back the world of Dark Sun in 2027. This classic world is known for its brutal combat and difficult survival. Our own Steven Starkey summarized the announcement while fighting off hordes of hungry halflings at Gen Con:
Also in 2027, during the Season of Survival and for the first time in 5th edition, D&D will give us a new take on the Dark Sun setting. While continuing with the original Dark Sun theme of survival in a harsh world which, as they put it, “isn’t a world you save, it’s a world you survive”, Wizards will be offering their first mature-themed content for D&D. The books will be shrink wrapped and rated 18 plus. With bloodshed, nudity, and sexuality, players can expect content targeted at adults and definitely outside of the family-friendly fare of previous releases. The setting continues to be ruled by tyrannical sorcerer kings controlling city-states through power and fear. Seven city states encompassing a variety of adventure settings from tree towers and corpse plant guardians to tyrants pursuing power, dabbling in forbidden arts, and practicing taboo rituals, the world is harsh and takes heroics just to survive. There will be a map pack, a Dungeon Master's screen, and 3 books: a player’s expansion, a dungeon master’s setting guide, and a limited-edition player's handbook with alternate Dark Sun parts. Within nearly 500 pages of new content, players will find the new Scion class.
