Dreamfall Lands on GOG

Wonkers is a Watilla: an ambulatory children’s toy designed to interact with and entertain little kids.  Think of him like a Teddy Ruxpin, only instead of putting in audio cassettes and hearing a story, you install an AI core and receive such boundless love and devotion that you never want to leave Zoe Castillo’s bedroom.

But you do, because Wonkers is just one of the characters you’ll want to meet in Dreamfall: The Longest Journey.  Director and lead writer Ragnar Tørnquist has an uncanny talent for populating his adventure games with memorable personalities, and while Dreamfall could be called out for its lack of actual game play, the brief combat and stealth sequences are easily forgotten when the surrounding fiction is so well realized.  Maybe I’m just a sucker for characters with lives that exist beyond the immediate plot, but some of the conversations and themes in this game remain so vivid that it’s hard to believe six years have passed since its release.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey is now available on GOG.com for $14.99.  I suppose it stands well enough on its own, but personally, I’d recommend playing through the original game first.  There’s a good reason it was heralded as a highpoint for the adventure genre.
