Double Fine Productions, run by industry veteran Tim Schafer, has had unexpected success with their latest experiment in game-funding. They posted a project on the Kickstarter website and were greeted by thousands of fans eager to directly fund development of a new adventure game. A mere eight hours after posting the project, they were fully funded. 48-hours later, they have received more than triple their requested budget, demonstrating that crowd-source funding might be the way of the future.
Crowd-sourced fundraising sites like Kickstarter have been an incredible boon to the independent development community. They democratize the process by allowing consumers to support the games they want to see developed and give the developers the freedom to experiment, take risks, and design without anyone else compromising their vision. It’s the kind of creative luxury that most major, established studios simply can’t afford. At least, not until now.
