Disney Closes LucasArts

Reports are coming in that Disney has closed down veteran game development studio LucasArts and canceled all ongoing development projects. This announcement comes on the heels of Disney’s recent acquisition of LucasFilm and its subsidiaries.

“After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”

This unfortunate news is not too surprising given the tepid sales of recent LucasArts titles. Presumably LucasArts will still continue in a publishing role by partnering with third-party developers.  Thanks to GameInformer for the heads up!
